Big Brown’s Trainer Under the Weather, Will Miss Testifying

The star witness expected to headline Congress’ latest inquisition into drugs and sports will be a no-show. Rick Dutrow, Jr., the trainer of almost-Triple Crown winner Big Brown, had to pass up an opportunity to publicize himself again due to a virus.
The Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection will go on in their hearings on horse racing and what can be done to improve the ’sport of kings.’ Dutrow, who can be kindly described as the court jester, would have been asked a lot of questions, according to Rep. Ed Whitfield of Kentucky. Steroid use is just one of the many topics being investigated by the committee, and Dutrow’s comments concerning the use of winstrol would have surely come up. Chryste Gaines Having Trouble Shaking BALCO, with Good Reason

The fallout from the Marion Jones steroids scandal has been large and wide. Someone directly affected was Chryste Gaines, one of Jones’ teammates on the bronze-medal winning United States 100-meter relay team at the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia.
It has been widely publicized that Jones was stripped of her medals and ordered by the United States Olympic Committee to return them. Chairman Peter Ueberroth then said that the rest of the team should also give their awards back, a gesture that would also hold symbolic value.
“We basically heard the whole thing through the media,” Gaines said. “Our attorneys were contacted and the letter said that we should return the medals, but no one has officially sent us anything saying that we have to.”
Having to give back a medal or not may be the least of Gaines’ troubles. Having already served a two-year ban and being associated with people that read like a ‘who’s-who’ of performance-enhancing drugs and sports, the track and field star should quit while she is ahead. Continue Reading »

Two-Time Defending Mr. Olympia Guest Posing Shows Work to Be Done

The official flyer for the 2008 NPC Bev Francis Atlantic States Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships shows a grimacing Jay Cutler busting out a chest pose at what appears to be last year’s Mr. Olympia contest. He is huge and shredded, but still was not an overwhelming winner.
Cutler headlined the Atlantic States qualifier contest as a guest poser, and took the stage in lower Manhattan on June 7, not looking quite as sharp as the advertisement. Don’t get me wrong. I know that the Mr. O is three and a half months away, and there is plenty of time to get in game shape. But Cutler didn’t look much different than he appeared during the Arnold Classic at the beginning of March. Shouldn’t he have tightened it up in the past four months? Continue Reading »

Former WWF Champ to Make Ill-Advised Comeback

All sports have their hanger-ons who just can’t seem to realize when it’s over. Even the great ones like Muhammad Ali have bowed out closer to the bottom than the top. In the world of professional wrestling, where the show is the catch, former headliners have sunk down to the level of grappling on the independent circuit looking a bit grayer and heavier in the mid-section than we may remember them on television. As pathetic as some of them seem, they at least have been consistent with continuing their active careers.
Then there’s Brain James “Jim” Hellwig, better known as The Ultimate Warrior, who was perhaps the only wrestler to rival Hulk Hogan in popularity during the same era. Since calling it quits in 1999 and becoming a motivational speaker, Hellwig has not strapped on the fringed boots and put on his warpaint. But some good things can’t last forever. The Ultimate Warrior will once again shake the ropes at the age of 49, this time on June 25 in Barcelona, Spain. Continue Reading »

July Date in Atlantic City for Admitted Steroid User and Former NFL Pro Bowler

At least Jose Canseco is up front with us. He came right out and said that he needs money - in a hurry due to a bad divorce. He put up a challenge to anyone and everyone for a celebrity boxing spectacle in Atlantic City. The taker? Probably the smallest football player this side of David Meggett. No lineman, linebacker or even a tight end. No, Canseco lucked out with a return specialist, all 5′9″, 190 pounds of him.
Since hanging it up, Vai Sikahema has been a sportscaster in Philadelphia, where he played a good part of his career. Now the 45 year-old is a former Pro Bowler, as well as an ex-Gold Gloves participant. We all recall when he brought one back all the way at Giants Stadium and proceeded to throw combinations at the goal post padding with the home team logo. Continue Reading »

A Bit Outdated, But Fairly Informative Until…

Good luck finding a new book that is up to date with anabolic steroids. Most of the staples are now considered ‘oldies,’ and have actually become collectibles for some. But for recent info on what is going on in ‘gear world,’ you have to come to websites like this one - I hope!
Steve Gallaway’s “The Steroid Bible” (Third Edition) is a spiral-bound book that is still available on www.AnabolicSteroids.com for $49.99, and that includes a report “Importing Drugs.” A bit pricey, as far as I am concerned, for a book that is from 1997 with a $24.95 cover price. Attention-Seeking Trainer to Also Testify in Front of Congress

It appears as if Big Brown has one more race in him before being put out to stud. On Tuesday, Rick Dutrow, Jr., the colt’s trainer, said that the horse will be injected with Winstrol over the weekend. If he is healthy, Big Brown will run on either August 3 (the Haskell at Monmouth) or August 23 (the Travers at Saratoga). Now all we have to wait for is for Dutrow to try to take this statement back (as he did after the Preakness) and for the odds makers to figure on a strong bounce back run for the three year-old after receiving some gear.
Dutrow will have a busy week with an invitation from Congress for next Thursday. “Breeding, Drugs, and Breakdowns: The State of Thoroughbred Horseracing and the Welfare of the Thoroughbred Racehorse” is the latest interference on the sports world by members of the United States government. Expect him to make a horse’s ass out of himself, similar to Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, Raphael Palmiero and Sammy Sosa have in the past. Continue Reading »

Despite Decent Power Numbers in 2007, Suspected Steroid Sluggers Remain on the Sidelines
One is waiting for his day in court, the other for the next World Baseball Classic. Both have Hall of Fame Credentials and are young enough to still be playing. If chicks still dig the long ball, then this pair could still attract a harem full. But Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa haven’t received a sniff since they both became free agents following the 2007 season. And they shouldn’t expect anything to change in the near or far future.
Bonds broke Hank Aaron’s all-time home run record last summer and then was run out of San Francisco, while Sosa made a nice comeback in Texas, hitting 21 home runs and driving in 92 runs in 114 games. But the Dominican slugger was not asked to return and now has said that he intends on retiring after the next WBC, which is scheduled for March of 2009. How the 39 year-old intends on staying in game shape between now and then remains to be seen, but speculation will be running rampart on Sosa going back to his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs. The Rocket Killed Two Birds with One Stone with “Blue Magic”

A report in Tuesday’s New York Daily News brought Roger Clemens to the forefront once again, this time claiming that the star pitcher also used Viagra to enhance his performance on the baseball field. The Rocket is not the only major leaguer to have turned to the little blue diamonds for more reasons than erectile dysfunction.
According to Victor Conte, the founder of BALCO, all of the big name athletes in his stable used a similar supplement. The News article quoted Conte as saying as such, and that he felt that it was a “bigger product in nutritional supplements than creatine.” Viagra, in addition to it’s intended results, will also help build endurance; deliver oxygen, nutrients and PEDs to muscles more efficiently; and combat the side effects of testosterone injections. Clemens was reportedly using Sustanon 250, an anabolic steroid that includes different forms of test, so this would seem to add up. Continue Reading »

Apparent Telephone Miscommunication Led to Designation
Terrell Owens is a magnet for attention, with the majority of it being negative. On the heels of the wideout signing a $34 million, four-year contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys, he has been placed in the NFL’s “reasonable cause” testing program for performance-enhancing drugs. Although Owens has never failed a drug test, his failure to make himself available for a screening was the reason why he is in this situation.
According to Owens, it was a miscommunication over cell phone numbers which caused him to miss the notification from the league. He has met with league representatives to explain the situation, but the NFL refused to comment due to confidentiality requirements in regards to the program. Owens will be subject to up to six offseason tests.
