A morning that was overcast during the prejudging ended up in a beautiful sunny day at the beach for the finals at the 2009 Mr. and Mrs. Jones Beach USA contest. For the second consecutive year, Dan Lurie and Steve Michalik brought Muscle Beach to the east coast by promoting an outdoor contest that included men and women’s bodybuilding, bikini, beach body, martial arts exhibitions and even a live salsa band.

At the end of a glorious day, 50-year-old Jim Caruso and 44-year-old Glenda Bozett took home their respective overall titles and beat out people half their age, proving once again that it is merely a number. For Bozett, it was her second consecutive time in the winner’s circle for the Jones Beach show.

Caruso, who went from a competitive bodybuilder in his younger days to “328 pounds of blubber,” as he described it, may have seemed an unlikely winner but proudly took home the hardware. “Even if I win the Mr. Universe contest tomorrow, I will always cherish this win the most,” he said afterwards.

Caruso put himself in the hands of Michalik, who saw that his pupil had what it takes to get back to where he once was. “He stopped feeling sorry for himself, and that was the biggest step,” Michalik said. Caruso drove 140 miles twice a week from his upstate, New York home to train with Michalik on Long Island and the results were obvious.

The 2008 Men’s Bodybuilding Overall winner, Steve Pecora, was a judge and guest poser.

    Well
I wonder why more photos of the event aren,t available.I like the show and found it inspiring to compete against fellow octogenarians! If the public coulsd see how fit us guys and wopmen are they might be inspired to exercise more!

This event was rigged in the teenage division. It was so obvious and a disgrace in bodybuilding.

    Michael,

That’s a pretty interesting comment. I would appreciate it if you could elaborate more on why you feel that way. Thanks, -Joe

I went to watch this event as an avid lover of body building shows. Overall the contestants were good. Some should not have even been on stage. The worst part of the whole day was the fact that no one controlled the crowd of people who rudely stood in front of the stage blocking the view of all the people sitting on the beach where they belonged. No matter how many times things were said to the people running the show, no one took charge. Even the Jones Beach police were so busy stuffing their faces with food, the failed to clear the cement walkway from standing people which was supposedly “against the rules” of the permit the show obtained. I hope next year the promoter does something so that everyone can see and enjoy the show. An honorable mention to the friendly hulk hogan looking guy for being the only one trying to control the crowd…..”Your the Man”..and thanks!
