MMA Great Fedor Emelianenko Retires; Never Entered UFC (Full Career MMA Record)
- Updated: June 22, 2012
It has been a long time coming, but MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko has announced his official retirement immediately following a first round knockout of Pedro Rizzo during an M-1 Global event in his home country of Russia. “The Last Emperor” took to the microphone after getting his hand raised by the referee and broke the news to the crowd.
“I think it’s time,” he said. “I’m retiring from sports. I still have the SAMBO World Championship. My family is the reason I will not be fighting again. My daughters are growing without their father, so it’s the right time to leave.”
Fedor, 35, further stated that there were no “fantastic offers” to tempt him out of retirement, thus closing the door on a possible UFC bout. He walks away with an impressive 34-4 overall record and regarded as one of the best heavyweights in the sport, but there will always be the population that wonders how he would have fared in the top organization.
Emelianenko dominated during his days in the PRIDE Fighting Championship and fared well until his last few fights in Strikeforce. But regardless of where he fought, it’s difficult to dispute Emelianenko’s nine-year undefeated stretch.
