Glutathione Deficiency and Chronic Disease

By  Cara Trentadue – Glutathione deficiency is being implicated in many major diseases in the human body from HIV, cancer, aging to bi-polar mood disorder.  Glutathione is a funny antioxidant enzyme that is synthesized by the human body.  External stresses of modern life can inhibit the bodies ability to recycle this amazing substance.  Taking supplemental forms of Glutathione isn’t very efficient because it isn’t absorbed well by the body.  Taking precursors and following a few steps I will list and explain in this article is a much more efficient way to increase glutathione levels in the body.

Glutathione is a tri peptide ( three amino acids bonded together to form another compound ) cysteine, glycine, glutamine.

Glutathione is an intracellular antioxidant, which means it is available inside the cell which put it at an advantage because it is in a position to protect cell integrity at the source.  Glutathione is found in every cell in the human body, it assists in the detoxification of the kidneys and the liver and is extremely protective of the lungs and even protects smokers from absolute damage to the lungs*.  It is also a major free radical scavenger in the brain.

Glutathione has been called the “mother of all antioxidants” for reason such as its ability to recharge or recycle itself and preserve other antioxidants like Vitamin C and E as well as synthesis and repair DNA which is vital in prevention of diseases like cancer at the cellular level.   The way glutathione acts is the sulfur compounds which make it up actually absorb the electron imbalance which make free radicals dangerous.  It acts strongly upon and removes free radical peroxides one of the most dangerous and damaging free radicals known to us.   Glutathione has many benefits some are as follows:

Removes (chelates) mercury, cadmium from the blood

Helps improve blood flow in smokers

Protects the liver and kidneys and aids in the detoxification of these organs.

Aids in DNA synthesis and DNA repair

Removes very harmful free radicals (peroxides)

Inhibits inflammation

Reduces the effects of aging

Increases Immunity

Aids in clear Brain Function and scavenges free radicals in the Brain

Maintains Genes that are needed to avoid cancer.

Helps with recovery in the case of overtraining

Even though this important antioxidant is produced through biosynthesis, the effects of modern life, pollution, stress, processed food, exposure to heavy metals, aging, and even radiation inhibit the bodies ability to synthesize  glutathione and causes deficiency.  The best way to ensure your Glutathione levels are up to par, there are a few things you can do in the course of your Healthy Living Lifestyle that your body will thank you for.  Here they are:

  1. Eat foods rich in sulfur, garlic ( raw) onions (raw) broccoli, kale, cauliflower,
  2. Use whey protein products that contain cysteine which is a precursor to glutathione and will assist your body in biosynthesis.
  3. Exercise
  4. Take supplements that will naturally raise levels, ALA, NAC, and Selenium.

NAC or N-acetyl- L cysteine increase Glutathione levels in your body and is given as treatment for Acetaminophen poisoning because it acts as a detoxifier of the liver and kidneys.    Generally taking 600mgs of NAC daily will help restore Glutathione levels in your body.

  • This article in no way advocates taking Glutathione in an attempt to continue smoke.  No person should ever smoke.

NOTE:  before taking any supplements consult your doctor.

My name is Cara (www.carashealthyliving.com) and I have been studying nutrition  and practicing an alternative healthy lifestyle for over 20 years.  After learning how the body has the innate ability to heal itself in most cases proving you give it what it needs to do so I wanted to share this knowledge with the world.

I studied Nutrition and Weight Management Counseling at American Fitness Professionals and Associates and I am always pursuing new knowledge about healing the body and prevention of disease.   With over 20 years of practice behind me there is no argument that prevention is the easiest way to avoid sicknesses like type 2 diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.  I do not advocate “diets” I teach lifestyle change.  The children of America in this generation are said to be the only generation whose parents will outlive them.  Diet and lifestyle play a major role in this trend.  We need to turn it around.
