Metabolic Syndrome: Are You At Risk?

By  Cara Trentadue – Metabolic Syndrome is a combination of disorders that increase a persons risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and even certain cancers. Metabolic Syndrome is a condition that doesn’t really need a diagnostic test, you can usually tell by looking in the mirror. Weight that accumulates around the midsection (bellyfat) is a good indicator that Metabolic syndrome could be your problem. However there are also several diagnostic markers that will give you and your doctor a better understanding of what the source of your weight problem is and its important to treat the source otherwise your will suffer chronic weight gain and a yoyo effect that is very dangerous.

A Complete LIPID PROFILE will indicate your risk factors that are due to metabolic syndrome.

Triglyceride levels over 150 mg/dl. Triglycerides measure dietary fats in the blood, which speaks to dietary habits and how they can affect our health these fats can be lowered naturally by increasing our omega 3’s and avoiding hydrogenated oils completely.

HDL under 40 mg/dl in males and under 50mg/dl in women. High density lipoproteins are the good fats in the blood that help transport LDL out of the body. Ideally we should aim for a number over 70 mg/dl. This can be achieved by increasing your fiber intake and increasing Omega 3’s. Studies have also shown a diet low in sugar and refined carbohydrates will help regulate lipid ratios.

Fasting Glucose over 100 is a good indicator of your future risk of type 2 diabetes. Blood glucose levels should remain at 80 and below.

New research is now indicating that low testosterone levels can raise your chances of developing metabolic syndrome. Low testosterone levels can also put you at risk for heart attack and stroke. I personally feel that it’s a test worth getting. If you find out to have low testosterone levels, natural measures and dietary changes can be implemented to boost your levels. There is also another test called c-reactive protein ultrasensitive, which checks for systemic inflammation will give you and your doctor a clear picture of where to target preventive measures to reduce the risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome. Vitamin D levels should also be checked.

Genetics play a part in persons risk factor but it doesn’t guarantee your fate. Changes can be made immediately to circumvent symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Walking 30 minutes a day and avoiding processed foods along with proper supplementation will show changes in about 3-6 months if you remain consistent but the health benefits will be realized immediately. Taking systemic enzymes every day will also help if you have a more serious condition like heart disease. Systemic enzymes work wonders on reducing systemic inflammation in the body.

My name is Cara (www.carashealthyliving.com) and I have been studying nutrition  and practicing an alternative healthy lifestyle for over 20 years.  After learning how the body has the innate ability to heal itself in most cases proving you give it what it needs to do so I wanted to share this knowledge with the world.

I studied Nutrition and Weight Management Counseling at American Fitness Professionals and Associates and I am always pursuing new knowledge about healing the body and prevention of disease.   With over 20 years of practice behind me there is no argument that prevention is the easiest way to avoid sicknesses like type 2 diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.  I do not advocate “diets” I teach lifestyle change.  The children of America in this generation are said to be the only generation whose parents will outlive them.  Diet and lifestyle play a major role in this trend.  We need to turn it around.
