The New York Yankees announced recently that Notre Dame will host Army at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 20, 2010, marking the 50th time the schools have played against one another in one of college football’s classic rivalries.

The two historic programs met 22 times at the original Yankee Stadium – the previous home of the New York Yankees – with the Irish holding a 14-5-3 record in games played from 1925-29, 1931-46, and 1969 (the 100th anniversary of college football). Overall, the two schools have played 49 times, with Notre Dame leading the matchup 37-8-4.

“The Yankees are proud to host two of the nation’s premier college football programs, and excited to bring college football to Yankee Stadium” said Yankees Managing General Partner Hal Steinbrenner. “We look forward to carrying the great tradition of the Notre Dame-Army game from the original Stadium into our new home.”

The Notre Dame-Army rivalry came of age in the mid-1940s, highlighted by four straight seasons from 1943-46, in which both Notre Dame and Army entered their Yankee Stadium matchup ranked fifth or higher in that week’s Associated Press poll. The Irish came into the 1943 game ranked No. 1, and then Army brought the higher ranking into the contest in 1944, ’45 and ’46. In 1946, No. 1-ranked Army and No. 2-ranked Notre Dame squared off in the “Game of the Century” that ended in a scoreless tie and was made legendary by John Lujack’s game-saving tackle of Cadet running back Doc Blanchard.

“Any student of Notre Dame football history knows the meaning of the Notre Dame-Army rivalry and, in particular, the history of that rivalry at Yankee Stadium,” said Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick. “It’s fitting that a Notre Dame-Army game will be the first football event in this fabulous facility – and it’s also fitting that the 50th meeting in this great rivalry will take place in a venue with such great tradition for both programs.”

“We could not be more excited about bringing ‘big-time’ college football back to Yankee Stadium,” said Army Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson. “I’d like to thank the Steinbrenner family and the entire New York Yankees organization for giving us the opportunity to play the first college football game at the new Yankee Stadium. I think it’s very fitting that one of the most historically significant rivalries in the history of college football, ushers the sport back to Yankee Stadium. At one time, the Army-Notre Dame game at Yankee Stadium was one of the most anticipated matchups in every college football season. We think this event will create the same type of excitement in college football circles.”

In the 1940s alone, while playing at the original Yankee Stadium, Notre Dame claimed consensus national titles in 1943, ’46, ’47 and ’49 – while Army won back-to-back national titles in 1944 and ’45. In that same decade of the 1940s, Notre Dame produced three Heisman Trophy winners in Angelo Bertelli (1943), Lujack (1947) and Leon Hart (1949), while Army fielded two in Blanchard (1945) and Glenn Davis (1946).

The original Yankee Stadium also played host to the 1928 matchup which resulted in a 12-6 Irish victory. The game was scoreless at halftime, when Notre Dame head coach Knute Rockne gave his now-famous “win one for the Gipper” speech in the locker room.

Notre Dame holds an all-time mark of 15-6-3 in Yankee Stadium games, also facing off against North Carolina in 1949 (a 42-6 Irish victory) and Syracuse in 1963 (a 14-7 Orange win). Army played 38 times at the original Yankee Stadium, compiling a combined mark of 14-19-5 against Notre Dame, Illinois (1930, ‘47), Michigan (1945, ‘50), Navy (1930-31), Stanford (1928, ‘48), Syracuse (1960, ‘64), Air Force (1959), Columbia (1936), Oklahoma (1961), Pittsburgh (1962), Princeton (1942) and Southern California (1951).

The 2010 Notre Dame-Army matchup will be the first college football game at the home of the Yankees since Grambling hosted Central State in the Whitney M. Young Urban Classic on September 12, 1987, at the original Yankee Stadium. The Stadium also hosted college football games for Fordham and NYU from 1923-48. As one of the world’s most prestigious addresses, the original Yankee Stadium was also the home for scores of other sports, entertainment and cultural events, including boxing, professional football, soccer, political assemblies, three Papal masses, religious conventions, concerts, NYU commencement and the circus.

The Yankees will have an announcement in the future regarding ticket availability for the general public. Notre Dame expects to make tickets available to its contributing alumni and fans through its alumni lottery as it does with all other football games. Army will receive an allotment of tickets as the visiting team.

The New York Yankees announced today that Yankee Stadium will host additional college football games, with Army playing a home game at Yankee Stadium in 2011 vs. Rutgers, 2012 vs. Air Force and 2014 vs. Boston College.

The announcement comes on the heels of Monday’s release that Notre Dame will host Army on November 20, 2010, marking the return of college football to the Yankees home Stadium for the first time since 1987.

Army played 38 times at the original Yankee Stadium, compiling a combined mark of 14-19-5 against Notre Dame, Illinois (1930, ‘47), Michigan (1945, ‘50), Navy (1930-31), Stanford (1928, ‘48), Syracuse (1960, ‘64), Air Force (1959), Columbia (1936), Oklahoma (1961), Pittsburgh (1962), Princeton (1942) and Southern California (1951).

“When constructing Yankee Stadium, it was important that it serve as a viable venue for hosting multiple sporting events,” said Yankees Chief Operating Officer Lonn Trost. “We felt it was a natural fit that we carry the storied tradition of Army football at Yankee Stadium from the original Stadium to our new home.”

“Playing football games at Yankee Stadium was a big part of Army’s football history from the 1920s through the 1960s,” said Army Athletic Director Kevin Anderson. “This exciting partnership with the Yankees allows the Army program to harken back to its past. Our fans will enjoy the state-of-the-art amenities offered by Yankee Stadium and will provide an unforgettable experience for our fans, players and the Corps of Cadets. We feel that being associated with a world-class organization like the Yankees will help carry our marketing and branding efforts to new heights.

It is difficult to imagine what Victor Martinez has gone through recently. To have one of your siblings go missing and then found to be the victim of a heinous crime is enough for anyone to accept. The emotional highs and lows during the time frame before Eridania Rodriguez’s body was positively identified must have been torturous and things will only get more painful as the charges and possible trial of the perpetrator begin to take place. Martinez, 38, was also the family member who identified his sister’s body at the medical examiner’s office.

This would be a trying time for anyone, let alone a professional bodybuilder preparing for the most prestigious contest of the year. Although no one wants mention it during this period of mourning, but sooner or later the subject will have to come up on just how much of an impact this will have on Martinez.

As it was, the Dominican Dominator was still making strides in his comeback from a serious injury. After having to sit out the 2008 Mr. Olympia, Martinez finished as the runner-up to Kai Greene at the Arnold Classic in March. Although he did look impressive, Martinez did have some weaknesses that needed to be addressed if he expects to have a legitimate shot at winning the Sandow.

How much this tragic series of events affect Martinez remains to be seen. He has no doubt missed some time from the gym – and understandably so – which can make a difference down the road. He also went through with the grand opening of his New Jersey restaurant, the Muscle Maker Grill, approximately a week after the murder.

Being busy may be the best remedy for some people during tough times. But exactly how long Martinez can put his nose to the grindstone and put this past him is going to be one of the most incredible feats if he can pull it off. He intends on training twice a day, six days per week in preparation for the Olympia.

If his past in any indication, Martinez will be able to turn this around and use it as an incentive. When his mother passed away shortly before the 2007 Olympia, Martinez kept his concentration and finished as Jay Cutler’s runner-up, a decision that many said could have easily gone the other way.

It would be the perfect Hollywood ending if Martinez could capture the Sandow and dedicate it to his sister. Counting him out would be foolish, especially for his competition. Yes, he may have had a major interruption during a pivotal period before the contest, but Martinez is one tough out and will be able to get himself ready regardless of the circumstances.

What will they say now? All of the sportswriters who have been squawking about the so-called ‘steroid era’ in baseball may have to modify their stance just a tad if the following is true: Mickey Mantle was given testosterone by a physician which caused an abcess in his hip during the 1961 season.

According to a story penned by Zev Chafets in ESPN the Magazine (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4192628), the Mick was given a concoction of test and amphetamines in a dirty needle which caused the Yankee centerfielder to miss enough time during that famous summer. Both he and teammate Roger Maris were locked in a home run chase before Mantle’s injury forced him into the hospital. He finished with 52 home runs while Maris hit number 61 on the last day of the season to surpass Babe Ruth’s mark.

Chafets, who wrote “Cooperstown Confidential: Heroes, Rogues and the Inside Story of the Baseball Hall of Fame,” also mentions that gaining that edge may have went all the way back to the nineteenth century. A pitcher named Pud Galvin is said to have injected monkey testosterone in 1889.

Just how Chafets came across this information remains to be seen. It appears to be a good way to market his book. According to records, Harvard professor Charles-Edouard Brown-Sequard self-injected a substance consisting of the extracts of dog and guinea pig testicles but there was not any significant progress in that field until 1927.

Galvin, baseball’s first 300-game winner and member of the Hall of Fame, was one of Brown-Sequard’s test subjects during a study at a medical college in Pittsburgh. What was called an ‘elixir’ at the time was widely praised by the Washington Post, with the telling line being, “It is the best proof yet furnished of the value of the discovery.”

On the Mantle issue, all the reports state is that a doctor gave him an injection which caused him a great deal of pain in his hip. It later turned into an abscess and eventually shut him down in September. What exactly was in that injection is the million dollar question.

Of course frequency and intent hold a lot of integrity in many people’s minds, but the old ‘pure’ days may be a little different than many were made to believe. One shot of test is not going to do anything for you, especially a professional athlete, but if critics were killing today’s players for admitting to using on only a handful of occasions -which in of itself is ridiculous – then they have to keep their minds open if the Mantle reports are in fact valid.

The early 1960s is the period where bodybuilders began using performance-enhancing drugs more regularly so it is not out of the realm of possibility that a doctor treating an athlete, ie:) a baseball player, would have known that the use testosterone would have a positive affect on physical performance.

So the next time that an argument starts going towards the modern day players all being cheaters, that can be counteracted by stating that two Hall of Famers were doing it, too.

Back in the 1930s, entire families would gather around the radio in anticipation of the next episode of a popular crime drama. A famous line during the opening was its signature phrase, one that still is revered today.

“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows.”

Times have changed and society has moved on from radio to high definition television, but that simple statement rings true as much now over seven decades later. The main difference is that ‘The Shadow’ is not a vigilante crime fighter, but rather a six-time Mr. Olympia.

England’s Dorian Yates shares the same nickname as the old time radio hero and ruled the bodybuilding world from 1991 to 1997. He still is heavily involved in the sport after retiring with his Temple Gym chain and as a staff writer for Muscular Development magazine. These days Yates has taken on another task in training Jason Arntz, the 37-year-old New Jersey native who has been a regular on the new IFBB 202 circuit.

“I usually do my own dieting and contest preparation for the past 10 or 11 years, ” Arntz said after a guest posing appearance at the NPC Empire States. “Now I’m working with Dorian Yates and I’m going to take a little different approach. If you’re going to learn from somebody it might as well be the best. So we’ll see what we can cook up with him this year.”

Arntz current weight is 220 so it will be fairly easy to make weight come September at the 202 Olympia. “I eat pretty good all year,” he said, so a strict diet for me is the last three or four weeks. But I’ve been dieting for the last three weeks and going to kick it into gear starting on Monday (July 20).”

Since turning pro in 1998, the 5’5″ Arntz has found the terrain difficult against the bigger competition. Oddly enough he had his best finish in his rookie show. Arntz placed fifth at the 1999 Toronto Pro and then had to wait until the 202 division was formed to see anything higher.

At the 2008 New York Pro 202, Arntz finished in the top three and then placed fourth in the first 202 show at the Mr. Olympia. That show was sort of a test run to gauge interest in that division and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. Proving that point is the fact that this year the posedown and placings will be announced on the Olympia stage at the Orleans Arena as opposed to the expo stage, something that Arntz definitely approves of. ”I’m real happy about that,” he said. ”You felt like a second-class Olympian (at the expo).” Being tutored by the great Dorian Yates will definitely make Arntz feel like a first-class citizen, especially if he can win the title this year.

For a few moments during the NPC Colorado State Championship on Saturday evening, hardly a hush could be heard coming from the crowd. Phil Heath was barely a minute and a half into his guest posing routine before he attempted to perform a front double bicep pose low to the ground with his right leg fully extended.

All of a sudden Heath’s right knee gave out and he went to the ground, rolled on his back and grabbed his knee. It took only a few seconds before backstage personnel came to his aid and they cut the music. For nearly a minute, Heath just stayed in that position until he turned his head towards the crowd and said, “I was just cramping up. I’m sorry.”

A loud applause followed and he was helped to his feet. He then said, “I don’t know what the hell happened. I’ve been cramping up all day,” and blamed the warm weather as a possible reason. Heath then told everyone that he would walk off the stage and begin his routine all over again. Needless to say, he stayed away from that low pose during the second routine.

Heath appeared no worse for wear but it did seem that he was being more cautious, even at one point taking a peek behind him when he was getting set to perform a rear lat spread while standing close to the front of the stage.

What remains to be seen is if there are any complications to his knee the following day. Heath may have felt as if it was nothing serious and was able to get through the routine, but it could have been worse than it appeared.

All in all, Heath appeared to be in superb condition and looked much better than he did in May when he guest posed at the NPC Long Island. He still seems to be carrying a little too much weight for his 5’9″ frame – perhaps a cause of the accidental slip – but seems to be on his way to a great showing at the Mr. Olympia contest in September.

If even the slightest injury was suffered to his knee, Heath may have to miss some preparation time. The worst case scenario would be that it is serious enough to cause him to miss the Olympia, which would be a crime. “The Gift” finished in third place in 2008, quite an accomplishment for his rookie ‘O.’ He was also being spoken of as one of the favorites in a deep line-up.

EDITOR’S NOTE: In light of the death of Serge Nubret, we have posted an updated related article

In this day and age of instant access and technology that can dispel rumors before they even get any legs, it is amazing that the situation concerning the health of a bodybuilding legend has been in doubt for months on end. Serge Nubret, 70, was reportedly training to make a guest posing appearance at this year’s Mr. Olympia contest before being found in a comatose state at his home in France on March 19, 2009. Nubret’s website included this official statement:

To cut a long story short and to stop the rumors available on the internet, we have decided to publish this official statement concerning Serge Nubret’s health state.

On March 19 2009, our father was discovered home, in a coma by firemen. He was immediately transfered to the Lariboisiere hospital. Since that, Serge Nubret is under the supervision of the hospital’s medical staff. For now, the diagnosis is a hypoglycemic coma probably due to a malfunction of the pancreas. The explorations continues while Serge Nubret is in rehabilitation. We will keep you informed of any change in its health state.

Meanwhile, we suspend the website. Thank you for your understanding and support.

His children.

He was hospitalized and then supposedly suffered a stroke, which was not confirmed. There was even a rumor that Nubret had passed away. Approximately a month later, a forum on the (deleted upon request) reported that he may have been poisoned and that his daughter was his primary care physician:

*(Deleted Upon Request – Please Check the Editor’s Note at End for More Information)

A day later, the same forum member posted the following:

*(Deleted Upon Request)

And then on the Muscular Development forum, the following was reported as being from a “friend of Serge Nubret”:

Dear Friends of Serge,

Tommy and I are putting together a card to send to Serge from all of his
friends and fans to show him love and support. Serge has been in the hospital since March 18 when he was poisoned at Pascale’s apartment and sent to intensive care toxicology.

A police investigation has been going on for the past several weeks to fully examine all who were involved and the cover up at Lariboisiere Hospital (where Serge had been sedated/drugged into a state of coma/confused trance where he did not recognize anyone for over a month and could not move or talk).

His daughter, Karine, an anesthetist, was the doctor in charge of him. No one was allowed to see him. When the police became involved, Serge’s condition started to improve immediately–less than 24 hours later he started to recognize people again after the drugs/sedation were ceased.

He is still unable to talk or move very much. Police District 10 is not giving out much information right now because of protocol/security procautions; some of his family are currently under investigation.

Before Serge was poisoned, he was in one of the best conditions of his life. His physique looked similar to and weighed the same as it had decades earlier at his best.

Because he had no heart attack/stroke and his heart/brain MRI was also normal, we are hoping for recovery of memory and health and that there
is no permanent damage from being poisoned, drugged and sedated. Please send him positive energy and prayers.

Thank you.

The latest word came on July 17 when the Bodybuilding.com forum included this post, supposedly from Nubret himself:

my children poisened me to take my money books and land

they drugging me so I canot talk and lies why i am here
i canot walk i dont want die in hopital
hopital know this and cover up everyting pleas get me out

serge

We have reprinted all of the above posts in their original form, misspellings included.

What exactly happened to Nubret remains to be seen, but one thing that we know for sure is that he was training and looking fantastic for someone his age right before he was felled. The likely speculation was that Nubret was using performance-enhancing drugs for his ‘comeback,’ if you will, which caused him to become ill in the first place. Even if he was using anything, his possible grave present condition would appear to have more causes.

MuscleSport Mag has contacted the IFBB and the person who sent the information to Muscular Development asking for any details or at least clarification on what is and what is not true in this situation.

——————————————————————————————————————————

*EDITOR’S NOTE

Please be advised that the above article has been modified upon request of someone close to the situation. While we take our journalistic responsibilities seriously and understand that the information that was originally included is very important, we are also showing an amount of respect to the requester.

The safety of Serge is of the utmost importance and once we receive more information and feel it is the right time to publicize it, we will then of course follow up on this most interesting story. Not being able to verify certain aspects of the situation surrounding Serge has been frustrating, to say the least, but we feel that the route we have chosen to take will be the best one in the long run.

Please understand that this is a real-life situation and we as a media outlet do not want to keep our readers in the dark, but the sketchiness of this entire scenario has left us guessing, as well.

UPDATE – APRIL 2011

With the latest news on Nubret’s death, we have decided to post the original article:

In this day and age of instant access and technology that can dispel rumors before they even get any legs, it is amazing that the situation concerning the health of a bodybuilding legend has been in doubt for months on end. Serge Nubret, 70, was reportedly training to make a guest posing appearance at this year’s Mr. Olympia contest before being found in a comatose state at his home in France on March 19, 2009.
His children.

He was hospitalized and then supposedly suffered a stroke, which was not confirmed. There was even a rumor that Nubret had passed away. Approximately a month later, a forum on the Quantum Touch website reported that he may have been poisoned and that his daughter was his primary care physician:

Hi. My friend, Serge Nubret was deliberately poisoned. His photo is my avatar. He is at Laribroisiere Hospital in France in the Toxicology Department. He has been sedated there for the past 4 weeks. No one is allowed to see him but the family…most of whom he does not trust.

He was in excellent health before. Now he’s in a strange hypnotic zombie state for no reason…like he’s all drugged up and does not recognize people some of the time. He should have been out of there after a few days. But he can not talk or eat or stay awake most of the time. He’s lost a lot of weight. There is no heart or brain damage. His daughter is one of his doctors who is keeping everyone away from him. She is an anethetist and was not on speaking terms with him, but now controls his health and won’t talk to anyone or let anyone see him. He is fighting for his life.

I stressed out so bad about it, I got shingles near my eyes and I need QT myself. I feel very badly about what is happening because it’s unbelievable and sad. Please Help! Send QT and prayer for healing and strength. Thank you so much. I will send my best energy, QT and prayers to all of these requests that I read as well! I’m just learning how to do it; it’s new to me.

A day later, the same forum member posted the following:

Today my friends in France filed a police report to investigate and move him out of there. I pray he will have the strength to survive until they can intervene.

And then on the Muscular Development forum, the following was reported as being from a “friend of Serge Nubret”:
