Barbie Garrido, Female Bodybuilder, Wears Many Hats to Success

And you think that you have had a tough time meeting your goals. Down in Miami, Florida, Barbie Garrido had to take care of her four children while going to college to become a Registered Nurse. That would have been a lot of anyone’s plate, but Barbie is not just anyone.
After deciding to do personal training “on the side,” as she put it, she met her current husband, who gave her the support she needed to take it to the next level – competitive bodybuilding, something Garrido, 39, has had a passion for since her early days at Brodie’s Gym. “It was a hardcore gym full of sweaty men,” she remembered. “I saw no women so I questioned that for a while until I came across a picture of Juliette Berman and Rachel McLish and I wanted to be like them.” Continue Reading »

Alex Truman, 17, of PA Masters Powerlifting; Bodybuilding Next in his Sights

When you begin preparing for powerlifiting competitions at the young age of 15, you know that you are taking weight training a little more serious than the rest of the bunch. Alex Truman of Butler, PA began working out and shortly thereafter realized where his passion lied. 10 months later, he entered his first local competition.
Only one year later, he won his weight division at the 2007 IPA PA States with a 1,180 pound total at a body weight of only 181. Some would have been satisfied with a victory, but not Truman.
“I knew I had to improve,” he said. “I started to train even harder and set my sights on a local Strongman show.” He entered the YMCA Octoberfest’s Strongest Man as a Novice Middle Weight, competing against people much older and more experienced than him, which turned out to be all the incentive he needed. If 3 Year-Old Runs, Dutrow & Iavarone May Enhance Chances

Big Brown may become just another footnote in the long list of almost-Triple Crown winners. The three year-old colt could have rode off into the sunset draped in carnations if he could have pulled off winning the Belmont Stakes this past Saturday. But it was not meant to be and now many questions have been raised about the future of the horse.
If he is not retired, the next race for him could be the Travers in August. The next question would be if trainer Rick Dutrow, Jr. would administer Winstrol in preparation of the race, one that could mean a lot of money - not only in potential winnings, but more importantly his stallion career. It would behoove the Big Brown camp to ensure a win to erase the disappointing performance at the sweltering Long Island race track. Continue Reading »
