Comments on Radio Could Have Been Even Stronger

Thomas Jones had absolutely no reason to justify his comments made on a New York radio station on Tuesday. The running back was totally justified by calling out the 39-year-old quarterback and his dismal performance during last Sunday’s 24-17 home loss to Miami, which eliminated the Jets from playoff contention (along with wins by New England and Buffalo). Much of the reason why the team didn’t control it’s own destiny was the ineffective play from Favre over the last five games, in which the Jets were lucky to win the one game they did salvage.
Jones is a very serious player and at times has seemed aloof to the media, but in reality he is just a player that expects the same commitment and performance from his teammates that he gives. According to reports that have come out since the season ended and head coach Eric Mangini was fired, Favre did not put in the effort during the week, which may have led to his less than satisfactory performances on many Sundays since September.

Owner May Have Had Unrealistic Expectations After Bringing in QB

Once the Jets finished their offseason shopping spree by bringing in Brett Favre, team owner Woody Johnson my have had visions of grandeur and foolishly thought that he was getting the quarterback of old, not just an old quarterback.
Even when the Jets were 8-3, they were winning in spite of Favre, not because of him. Their five-game winning streak was the one part of the season where Favre was not forcing the long throw and was having success underneath. Why they went away from that and started having the 39-year-old put the game on his shoulders is also a question that needs to be answered.

Far From a ‘Fair Weather’ Assessment, Brett All Wrong for Jets

Don’t accuse me of jumping on or off any Brett Favre bandwagon. I’m on record as not being in love with the acquisition of the first ballot Hall of Famer back on August 7. (”Throwing Cold Water on the Favre Parade” - http://www.musclesportmag.com/2008/08/07/throwing-cold-water-on-the-favre-parade/?preview=true&preview_id=291&preview_nonce=4e72bb6a34.) In fact, a week earlier, I was even more harsh in my opinion of Favre while he was still property of the Green Bay Packers and not my beloved Jets. (”Favre Far From Leader of the Pack” - http://www.musclesportmag.com/2008/07/30/favre-far-from-the-leader-of-the-pack/?preview=true&preview_id=186&preview_nonce=8e4cbfaab0.)
Now that Favre is showing all of his 39 years and then some, don’t point any fingers at me. I was one of the few that didn’t splurge for a number 4 jersey and wish that number 10 was still in green and not teal. Perhaps it was more of my having no confidence whatsoever in Kellen Clemens and his ineffectiveness. With the Arena Football League now a thing of the past (not officially, but for all intents and purposes), Roger’s namesake will have no place to ply his trade once the Jets come to their senses and let him go in a year or two.

Favre Hints Towards Retiring ‘Again’ After Seasonbr>

Nothing is forever, not even grisly, 39-year-old quarterbacks that still have enough youthful exuberance to challenge a second grader. When Brett Favre ‘un-retired’ over the summer and forced his way out of Green Bay, even he had to realize that he had one, maybe two years left in his right arm.
When the Jets made the trade for Favre in August, it came with no promises. That was the gamble that general manager had to make. To have the opportunity to bring in one of the best quarterbacks of all time – even a slower version – was too hard to pass up. The team had spent a ton of money in the offseason to upgrade the offensive line and entire defense, so to put all his eggs in one basket was not the most drastic of decisions.

Not falling for the ‘trap game’ mentality that has haunted so many teams over the years, the Jets totally dominated the hapless St. Louis Rams at the Meadowlands by a score of 47-3. After beating the Bills in Buffalo last week and having to go to New England this Thursday, it would have been easy to look past an out of conference 2-6 team.
That is not head coach Eric Mangini’s style. He prepares his team the same every week and was visibly happy after the convincing win. “With the completeness of the game, it’s something we’ve been stressing week in and week out,” he said. Continue Reading »

Jets Survive Scare in 28-24 Win Over KC

Brett Favre said in his post-game press conference two weeks ago in a victory over Cincinnati that there are no such things as ‘ugly wins.’ After Sunday’s come from behind 28-24 victory over Kansas City, the Jet quarterback didn’t go as far as making that statement again, but did admit that overcoming adversity and mistakes has its benefits.
“I’ve been a part of a lot of those games and I have been on both sides,” Favre said. “It sure feels better to be on the winning side.”
That seemed unlikely after Brandon Flowers returned an interception – Favre’s third of the game – 91 yards to give the Chiefs a 24-21 lead with 7:48 left in the game. But the Jets were able to put together a six-play, 46-yard scoring drive that culminated in a 15-yard touchdown reception by Laveraneus Coles on an under thrown corner fade, leaving only one minute left on the game clock. Jones Scores Three TDs to Pick Up a Listless Favre

Thomas Jones found the endzone on three separate occasions to lead the Jets to a 26-14 win at home versus the still-winless Cincinnati Bengals. On an unseasonably warm day at the Meadowlands, quarterback Brett Favre did not have his best outing (two interceptions, one fumble) and the Jets were still able to up their record to 3-2.
“Turnovers will come back and bite you but you have to be able to overcome the turnover,” said Favre after the game. The Jets were tested on that analogy early on when Atwan Odom sacked Favre on the Jets first drive and stripped the ball, which was picked up by safety Chinedum Ndukwe and returned 15 yards for a touchdown.

Purple People Eaters Look to Take a Wide-Open Division in Transition

With the start of NFL training camps, MuscleSport Mag will bring you a team-by-team breakdown of all 32 clubs vying for the Lombardi Trophy on February 1, 2009 in Tampa Bay. We will start with the NFC East and work our way around the league.
The NFC North will be a very different looking division from only a year ago when the Green Bay Packers led the way with a 13-3 record. The 2007 Minnesota Vikings may have finished second at .500, but added the league’s sack leader and hope that quarterback Tarvaris Jackson will take the next step and lead the team to the playoffs, which they have missed since 200.
A strong backfield will go a long way in making that a reality, and adding wide receiver Bernard Berrian will make their offense well-rounded. On the other side of the ball, the Williamses and Jared Allen form a formidable group, which may be able to dominate the division. Continue Reading »

While Trade was a No-Brainer, Let’s Not Anoint Him Broadway Just Yet

You can’t go home again. That old saying rang true when Brett Favre had the door to Green Bay slammed in his face. The same place where he used to walk on water – and the Frozen Tundra – at first tried to be subtle in telling the grizzled veteran quarterback that they were all better off if he stayed away. But Favre wouldn’t accept that and forced a trade, one that even he called “unique” and surprising.
Perhaps the most unlikely of suitors were the Jets, and that’s exactly how this thing played out. When Favre was introduced during a hurried press conference in Cleveland, he, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and team owner Woody Johnson all appeared as if they stayed at the biggest party of the summer too late – exhausted, but glad that they did it.
“Did I ever think that this scenario would present itself?” Favre asked himself. “No.” That may be attributed to the fact that the legendary signal-caller would have preferred staying a Packer or being dealt within the NFC North. Neither was in the cards, so he finds himself in New York…er, New Jersey. Continue Reading »

Jets Should Forget About Green Bay QB

If your team had the opportunity to acquire a Super Bowl-winning quarterback who is also a nine-time Pro Bowler and sure first-ballot Hall of Famer, there wouldn’t be many scenarios where you would want to turn that offer down. Especially when heading into training camp, your quarterback situation is not settled, and the two battling it out for the job are not exactly headed to Canton unless they buy a ticket.
So what would make anyone say that Brett Favre to the Jets wouldn’t end in confetti being blown into the Tampa Bay night sky come February? Before we start booking the flight to Disneyland, it will make more sense once it is broken down. Continue Reading »
