We have arrived and immediately broke out the video camera to head to the “Meet The Olympians” session. Held on the concourse level of the Orleans Arena, there was plenty of room for the fans and pros alike. Of course Jay Cutler had the longest line to get his autograph, which was winding down the corridor. And this was during the 7:00 VIP hour. At 8, it was open to the general public and that line dwarfed Jay’s. No doubt that a good portion of the people waiting will end up just there, though.

Speaking of the defending champion, Cutler looks amazing. He should be able to retain the Sandow. Kai Greene was all covered up in his infamous hoodie, so we will have to wait and see until tomorrow. The majority of the pros were wearing a tight t-shirt or sleeveless shirt, so you can get a glimpse of what’s to come.

Phil Heath, Branch Warren and Victor Martinez looked good, but Dennis Wolf appears off again. Anything can change between now and then, but he still has that bloated look that has been his downfall of late.

In the 202, Kevin English looks amazing and will once again take that award back to Long Island. With the women, don’t take your eyes off Debi Lazewski. She sounded totally confident and looked sharp.

Here’s a few video clips and interviews to kick things off. It’s getting late and I’ve been up for over 22 hours between traveling and working. I’ve been in Las Vegas since the afternoon and I haven’t lost a dollar yet. I haven’t won anything, either. Time to go downstairs to the roulette wheel and change that…

For a few moments during the NPC Colorado State Championship on Saturday evening, hardly a hush could be heard coming from the crowd. Phil Heath was barely a minute and a half into his guest posing routine before he attempted to perform a front double bicep pose low to the ground with his right leg fully extended.

All of a sudden Heath’s right knee gave out and he went to the ground, rolled on his back and grabbed his knee. It took only a few seconds before backstage personnel came to his aid and they cut the music. For nearly a minute, Heath just stayed in that position until he turned his head towards the crowd and said, “I was just cramping up. I’m sorry.”

A loud applause followed and he was helped to his feet. He then said, “I don’t know what the hell happened. I’ve been cramping up all day,” and blamed the warm weather as a possible reason. Heath then told everyone that he would walk off the stage and begin his routine all over again. Needless to say, he stayed away from that low pose during the second routine.

Heath appeared no worse for wear but it did seem that he was being more cautious, even at one point taking a peek behind him when he was getting set to perform a rear lat spread while standing close to the front of the stage.

What remains to be seen is if there are any complications to his knee the following day. Heath may have felt as if it was nothing serious and was able to get through the routine, but it could have been worse than it appeared.

All in all, Heath appeared to be in superb condition and looked much better than he did in May when he guest posed at the NPC Long Island. He still seems to be carrying a little too much weight for his 5’9″ frame – perhaps a cause of the accidental slip – but seems to be on his way to a great showing at the Mr. Olympia contest in September.

If even the slightest injury was suffered to his knee, Heath may have to miss some preparation time. The worst case scenario would be that it is serious enough to cause him to miss the Olympia, which would be a crime. “The Gift” finished in third place in 2008, quite an accomplishment for his rookie ‘O.’ He was also being spoken of as one of the favorites in a deep line-up.

If there was any doubt as to the strategy of Phil Heath coming into the 2009 Mr. Olympia contest, it was cast aside with his guest posing appearance at the NPC Long Island on May 30. ‘The Gift’ looked absolutely huge from all angles as he took to the stage in East Islip and showed that he fully intends on coming into Las Vegas even bigger than he did last year.

Some may say that he had enough size when he finished in third place in his rookie ‘O,’ but with behemoths like Jay Cutler, Dennis Wolf and Victor Martinez to contend with, Heath apparently felt the need to take it a step further.

He appeared extremely thick and soft, but with nearly four months of preparation ahead of him, he certainly has enough time to cut up and get his physique the way he needs to to take the Sandow home with him.

This should come as a warning shot fired to Dexter Jackson, who is looking to repeat but may not have the size to do so. That and his age are working against him and ‘The Blade’ may be a ‘one and done’ Mr. Olympia such as Chris Dickerson and Samir Bannout. Nothing to be ashamed of, of course, but he would certainly like to go on a streak of his own.

To see more photos of Heath, please visit http://www.rxmuscle.com/rxgallery.php?contest=&year=31&bodybuilder=1598#0

Worlds apart but connected at the end of the evening, Cathy LeFrancois and Evan Centopani both walked out of the New York Pro earning the championships in their respective divisions. LeFrancois, the 38-year-old Canadian-born veteran, repeated as champion while Centopani won his first professional show.

Centopani, 27, accomplished the feat in his first try after earning his pro card and did so not far from his home in Trumbull, Connecticut.

In the 202 class, Long Island resident Kevin English made it two in a row, besting Mark Dugdale and David Henry.

A deep line-up made Centopani’s victory even more impressive, as Dennis James, Markus Ruhl, Silvio Samuel, Hidetada Yamagishi and Tarek Elsetouhi rounded out the top six. In the women’s part of the contest, Betty Pariso, Rosemary Jennings, Debbie Bramwell, Dena Westerfield and Tazzie Columb all placed.

On Tuesday April 28 we will be joined by the great Dan Lurie on MuscleSport Radio. You will not want to miss a minute of this episode and we will delve into so much of the history of the Iron Game that Dan has experienced in his life.

Lurie, 86, is one of the most recognizable names in the industry and has seen it all. Even marginal fans of bodybuilding have come across the name Dan Lurie while lifting weights by looking at the name on the actual plates.

Lurie’s involvement in the inaugural Mr. & Mrs. Jones Beach USA contest last summer gave it immediate credibility and we will also be discussing the 2009 show, which will take place on Long Island on August 9. (www.jonesbeachusa.com)

His official website is www.danlurie.com.

MuscleSport Radio can be heard live every Tuesday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Eastern time on www.blogtalkradio.com and all episodes are archived on Blog Talk Radio, MuscleSport Mag and iTunes.

Although widely known for his inclusion in the Mitchell Report as one of the main suppliers of anabolic steroids in Major League Baseball, Kirk Radomski has brought to light a story that is much more disturbing than anyone taking performance-enhancing drugs.

While working as a clubhouse attendant for the New York Mets (1986-95), he supplied not one, but two urine samples for cokehead pitcher Dwight Gooden. Looked at as a sure future Hall of Famer earlier in his career, ‘Doc’ took the wrong road and failed three drug tests between 1987 and 1994, which subsequently resulted in him being suspended for the 1995 season.

Radomski spoke of the Gooden instances during an interview on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” on Sunday. He also has a tell-all book coming out on Tuesday entitled “Bases Loaded.”

The ESPN report further stated that Gooden would not comment further than text messaging “LOL” after he became aware of Radomski’s account.

Since he has become a public figure, Radomski has stayed away from the media until now. He pled guilty two years ago to distributing steroids and money laundering. For his cooperation, he pled out to a sentence of five years probation and a $18,575 fine. These days, Radomski is the co-owner of an auto shop in St. James on Long Island.

If 3 Year-Old Runs, Dutrow & Iavarone May Enhance Chances

Big Brown may become just another footnote in the long list of almost-Triple Crown winners. The three year-old colt could have rode off into the sunset draped in carnations if he could have pulled off winning the Belmont Stakes this past Saturday. But it was not meant to be and now many questions have been raised about the future of the horse.

If he is not retired, the next race for him could be the Travers in August. The next question would be if trainer Rick Dutrow, Jr. would administer Winstrol in preparation of the race, one that could mean a lot of money – not only in potential winnings, but more importantly his stallion career. It would behoove the Big Brown camp to ensure a win to erase the disappointing performance at the sweltering Long Island race track.

Dutrow admitted that prior to the impressive Kentucky Derby win, he gave Big Brown a shot of Winstrol. The trainer then flip-flopped on the subject after the next race. At first, he said that he did in fact give the steroid to the horse for the Preakness, another race where Big Brown dominated. Later on, he recanted and said that he didn’t give the horse Winny. He has been consistent in stating that he did not give Winstrol to Big Brown before Belmont, and it was obvious after the horse was eased out of the nine-horse race, dropping all the way back after holding onto third place at the beginning.

Dutrow, during an interview with New York Newsday, became agitated and refused to answer any further questions about steroids after reiterating that he didn’t use the drug in the last race and that he doesn’t use Winstrol “to help horses run faster.” Dutrow, who has been raked over the coals for his brash and outspoken way, made himself look worse than Roger Clemens with such a ridiculous statement. Steroids in sports are used for one reason and one reason only – to enhance the performance of the athlete, let it be a pitcher or a racehorse.

Bottom line is if Big Brown has a better chance to win at Saratoga by getting a shot of Winny, expect his owner and trainer to not give in to the public pressure concerning steroid use on horses. There are millions of dollars at stake, along with the reputation of a horse that could either be forgotten or remembered as a champion that had one bad day.
