And then there were two. As Jay Cutler and Branch Warren stood side by side on the stage at the Orleans Arena, the tension cut be cut with a knife. As emcee Bob Cicherillo was set to read out the winner’s name, a bit of confusion ensued when he led the announcement with “the new Mr. Olympia.”

Surely many people read into that statement and were under the impression that Warren’s name was about to be read. With Cutler having two Sandows to his name, many may have overlooked that defending champion Dexter Jackson was already on the side holding the third place check. So regardless of who won, technically he would have been the ‘new’ Mr. O.

Even though Cutler earned the win, Warren took a major step in his career towards adding his name to the list of Olympia champions. Coupled with his third place finish in March at the Arnold Classic, the Texan has become a major player in the open division and cannot be taken lightly or overlooked.

Since earning his pro card at the 2001 Nationals, Warren has had some success but never the kind where you would pick him as a possible winner of the two major shows, the Olympia and Arnold. That is until this year.

In his previous Olympia tries, Warren finished eighth (2005) and 12th (2006). As for the Arnold, Warren appeared to be on his way by being named the runner-up in 2006 but took a few steps back with a seventh place finish the following year.

His shelf is not totally void of hardware, though. Warren won the 2005 Charlotte Pro and Europa Supershow, as well as the 2007 New York Pro. While those are proud accomplishments, being remembered as one of the greats of your sport requires at least one O or Arnold.

It was the opinion of many that Warren, 33, was in the best condition at this past Olympia and his size only was accentuated by it. No one came close to matching his legs and his upper body was in proportion with his wheels. His placing may have been considered a surprise by some but for those who have been watching Warren for a while knew that it was only a matter of time before he caught up with the competition.

One more step to go.

Competing as a bodybuilder for over two decades, Craig Torres has seen a lot of others come and go. Some have moved on to bigger and better things in the sport while others have faded away. All along, the Stoneham, Massachusetts native has persevered.

On July 18, the 39-year-old took home the Light heavyweight and Overall titles at the 2009 NPC Empire States and hopes that will point him in the right direction a week later at the USAs. “It was a lot of good guys, good conditioned guys,” Torres said backstage while happily clutching one of his trophies. “I was using this as a gauge to see if I was going to stay as a light heavyweight or drop down to middleweight for my next show.

“A lot of these guys had great condition,” continued Torres. “They gave me a lot of compliments on my size so maybe I’m not bad for a light heavyweight, especially winning a show of this caliber and at this level in New York, one of the great states in bodybuilding”

Torres weighed in at the Empire States at 190 pounds, but figures to drop down a few the following week. “I don’t believe that I’ll be able to hold that weight at the USAs,” he said. “Those guys are going to be in top shape and at the top of their class. To be able to place in the top 15 – the top rankings – I’m going to have to drop at least five more pounds and come in at 185 pounds crisp.”

Earlier in the year, Torres’s bodyweight was up to 210 pounds and he felt comfortable not going over that amount. “The heaviest that I’ve ever been is 225, but I didn’t want to gain all that weight and then have to lose it.”

With a top 10 finish in a past Nationals show, Torres has the experience and knows what it takes to make a good showing on stage.

It’s easy to get lost in the shuffle in the amateur figure ranks the past few years. With the popularity of the sport growing more and more, the field of competitors has grown ten-fold. Attend any local contest and there are easily four or five classes in the figure that take the stage.

Even with the plethora of competitors, there are always the ones that stand out in the crowd. Erin Paige fits that description. The stunning blonde residing from Alexandria, Virginia qualified for the Nationals at the 2008 NPC Maryland and then had a top-six finish at the 2009 NPC Julie Palmer Invitational.

At a contest weight of 130 pounds, Paige works her way down on a diet consisting mostly of grilled chicken and talapia. One of her favorite ‘cheat meals’ are California rolls.

Being an athlete is nothing new to Paige, 28,who was named an All-American in lacrosse at both the high school and collegiate levels.

All work and no play is not a good remedy for anyone and Paige enjoys traveling to such locations as Las Vegas, Amsterdam and Dubai. When asked what she enjoys to eat during the offseason, Paige didn’t hesitate when saying, “Anything Thai and California Pizza Kitchen.”

Getting herself in the winner’s circle should not be too long of a wait for Paige. One of her keys to success is “Go hard or don’t go at all.” Even one look at her photos will prove that Paige puts her money where her mouth is.

NY Metropolitan Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships Took on New Meaning in ‘09 - The chatter began in the area of the judge’s table and photographer’s pit as soon as he walked on the stage.

“Where is this guy from again?”

“He looks real good.”

There was definitely a buzz in the air when the overall winner of the men’s bodybuilding class made his appearance, fittingly the last one to hit the spotlight. Audrius Jegelevicius was clearly the star of the show at the 2009 Steve Stone New York Metropolitan Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships and deservingly took home the top trophy of the night, which he proudly held as he made his way home via the Number 1 train headed uptown from the Chambers Street stop.

The 37-year-old Lithuanian also won the Super Heavyweight Division and beat out a well-conditioned Shaun Young (Heavyweight Division and Masters Overall, 35+ Over 176.25 winner) for the overall title on an evening that was about remembering a great man who dedicated his life to the sport that he loved.

The contest was renamed to pay homage to Steve Stone, who passed away during Olympia weekend last year. A moment of silence was done in his honor with a special moment between his widow and Bev Francis, the former great female bodybuilder who emceed the event.

Jegelevicius, who has been training for a quarter century, won his second show in the United States following his victory at the 2007 Eastern USA Championships. He is looking to do more damage in this country and plans on becoming a United States citizen. When asked if he will compete in the Nationals in November and have a chance to earn his pro card, he said there is a “90 percent chance” of that happening.

What began with a 12-year-old boy experimenting with a set of dumbbells back in Lithuania transformed into the shredded, 242-pound bodybuilder that had his hand held up in Manhattan. “The highest I was this year was 282,” he said, commenting on the mass he puts on in the offseason. He definitely brought the entire package to this show.

Perhaps the most entertaining portion of the card was the Pro Fitness competition, which was won by Shannon Meteraud. Trish Warren – who was being cheered on by her pro bodybuilder husband Branch and pro fitness competitor Jenny Lynn seated together in the first row – finished as the runner-up. Tina Durkin was the third place winner.

The others standing in the winner’s circle were Jermaine Morgan (Men’s Bodybuilding Light Heavyweight); Michael DePalma (Men’s Bodybuilding Middleweight, Masters 35+); Mike Grezzo (Men’s Bodybuilding Lightweight and Novice); John Kioskerides (Men’s Bodybuilding Bantamweight); Jeff Beckham (Men’s Bodybuilding Overall and Heavyweight); Frank Ruiz (Men’s Bodybuilding Light Heavyweight); Mario Valenzuela (Men’s Bodybuilding Novice Middleweight); Michael Dagro (Men’s Bodybuilding Novice Bantamweight); James Bocina (Men’s Bodybuilding Masters 45+); Calvin Myers (Men’s Bodybuilding Masters 55+); Michael Soltus (Men’s Bodybuilding Teen Overall and A); Nick Paladino (Men’s Bodybuilding Teen A); Marie Rita Penteado (Female Bodybuilding Overall); Melissa Stocker-Betz (Figure Overall, Class A and Masters 35+); Natalie Benjamin (Figure Class B); Kristen Nagrani (Fitness Class C); Stacey Curcio (Fitness); Blythe Alberg (Bikini Overall and Short Class) and Elise Firestone (Bikini Tall Class).

The variety that this show offered was definitely one of its plusses. Everything from “young” divisions to “old” was on the plate and the people in attendance at the Tribecca Performing Arts at BMCC certainly let their loud applause do the talking for them.

Hopefully they will recharge their batteries because just over a month after the show comes the IFBB New York Pro, an annual event held at the same venue also promoted by Francis and Steve Weinberger.

Slugger’s Agent States No Interest League-Wide

It was more than a rumor. The Arizona Diamondbacks gave Barry Bonds some consideration as a replacement for the injured Eric Byrnes, but ultimately decided against it. Even with a slumping offense, they have chosen to let the home run king stay an unsigned free agent.

Jeff Borris, Bonds’ agent, told the USA Today that he is not in discussions with any team about his client. “I am not talking to any club about Barry Bonds because they all made it very clear to me they are not interested in him,” Borris told reporters. “Every club.”

After having the best record in baseball earlier in the season, the D-backs currently are one game under .500 and share first place in the National League West with the Dodgers. On Wednesday night, they were shut out by the lowly Nationals.

A few days ago, Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes was asked about Bonds. “He and maybe a couple of others are sort of sitting out there,” was his response.

Borris went on to say that Bonds has continued to work out on his own and would only require 10 days of live pitching to prepare himself to play, and that the only thing holding him back is the “conspiracy” against him.

Call it a conspiracy. Call it collusion. That may be partially true, and the other reason why Bonds is still out there is because organizations are apprehensive to pull the trigger because of the public relations fallout sure to follow.

Anyone who has 762 career home runs can help at least one team. Even with his body breaking down, Bonds can still put a ball in the seats at any given time. What teams have to realize is that fans will cheer for their players just because they are wearing their jersey. If that player slumps, that’s when he will have the boos reign down on him.

There was a reason why Bonds heard cheers in San Francisco, especially last season when he was chasing Hank Aaron and needed support. Being faithful is a trait that every fan starts out with, especially when a new face comes to town.

Of course, there would be people who will boo Bonds, home and away. The media has made him out to be Public Enemy Number One just because he used performance-enhancing drugs. Even with no positive test, it is a foregone conclusion that Bonds used these substances, and probably a good amount of them.

John McCain even got into the act. The Republican presidential candidate was asked about the possibility of Bonds joining the D-backs, and the Arizona senator said that he trusted team management to make the right decision as to what is best for the team.

It’s obvious what’s best for the team. The question is if that is best for baseball.
