IFBB Pro World Master/Legends Bodybuilding & Bikini Results: Dexter Jackson, India Paulino Triumphant

At the inaugural Pro World Masters/Legends show in Miami Beach this past weekend, Dexter Jackson stood in the winner’s circle after cutting down a line-up that included some of the more legendary names in the sport of bodybuilding. More recent competitors such as “The Blade” finished higher than the likes of Samir Bannout, the 1983 Mr. Olympia winner who placed 11th here, with the rest of the top five being filled by Toney Freeman, Bill Wimore, Ed Nunn and Troy Alves.

But just seeing some of these names from yesteryear was a thrill all in it’s own, as the crowd at the Jackie Gleason Theater can attest. It has been years – and in some cases, decades – since some of these men donned the posing trunks.

In the bikini Olympia qualifier, India Paulino took first place, with Tianna Ta (second) and Juliana Daniell (third) following.

IFBB Pro World Masters/Legends Show Line-Up Card Released

2011 NPC Nationals – Who Will Join the Pro Ranks Next?

In less than one calendar year, Robert Burneika went from preparing as an amateur for the NPC Nationals to competing at the 2011 Mr. Olympia. He went from being just another number from a field of hundreds that night in Atlanta and earning his pro card to standing on stage with the likes of Phil Heath, Jay Cutler and Dexter Jackson.

Just who walks away from the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami, Florida this weekend remains to be seen, but it goes without saying that we should all take note of those names and expect to see them in the months and years ahead.

2011 will be the first year that the Men’s and Women’s Physique divisions will be represented at the Nationals.

In its 29th year of existence, the Nationals has had a who’s-who of the sport of bodybuilding come through the ranks. This is an impressive list of the winners and the greatness that many of the men have went on to obtain since turning pro is self-explanatory:

Phil Heath Makes It Two in a Row With Sheru Classic Win in India

If anyone thought that Phil Heath’s victory at the 2011 Mr. Olympia was a fluke, the man known as ‘The Gift’ backed it up by staying in top condition and winning the inaugural Sheru Classic in Mumbai, India. He bested his good friend Jay Cutler for the second time in a week, with the former champion settling for the runner-up spot again.

The top six resembled the one in Las Vegas in more ways, with Dexter Jackson being the one exception. ‘The Blade’ sat this show out, so Toney Freeman moved up from seventh at the O to sixth here. Kai Greene (third), Victor Martinez (fourth) and Dennis Wolf (fifth) placed the same.

The big names in bodybuilding will now enter a much deserved offseason in anticipation for an action packed 2012. In March, of course, the Arnold Classic takes place and we surely will see the likes of Martinez, Wolf and Freeman. But there will be questions if Greene will compete in Ohio again. It seems a given that Cutler and Heath will choose to prepare year round for the Olympia.

Phil Heath Defeats Jay Cutler To Become 13th Mr. Olympia in Bodybuilding History

They stood in the same spot on the Orleans Arena stage as they did a year ago, but on this evening it was Phil Heath who heard his name called as the winner. “The Gift” brought an incredible package to the stage and was able to knock out the champ – and his best friend – Jay Cutler, who was gracious in defeat.

“I’m actually happy right now,” Cutler said with a smile as he congratulated Heath on the win.

Overcome with emotion, Heath reveled in being congratulated by the other nine finalists and then brought up a story when he first met Cutler backstage at a local bodybuilding show. “I was playing college basketball back then…all scrawny and I saw (Cutler) walk by and I thought to myself, ‘That’s one big dude,’” recalled Heath.

Heath becomes the 13th man to win the Sandow and prevented Cutler from joining an elite group with five or more titles (Lee Haney, Dorian Yates, Ron Coleman).

Rounding out the top 10 were Kai Greene, Victor Martinez, Dennis Wolf, Dexter Jackson, Toney Freeman, Brandon Curry, Ronny Rockel and Hidetada Yamagishi.

Nicole Wilkins reclaimed the Figure Olympia title she lost to Erin Stern in 2010, with Stern taking the runner-up spot and Ava Cowan placing third.

Toney Freeman Wins 2011 IFBB Europa Dallas Super Show

In perhaps his last legitimate shot to win a big show, the ageless Toney Freeman took the top spot at the 2011 IFBB Europa Super Show in Dallas, Texas. At 45 years of age, the X-Man has been a consistent top-six competitor since making his professional debut at the 2003 Night of Champions, but has not tasted victory since the 2009 Sacramento Pro.

Ed Nunn gave Freeman a run for his money and finished as the first runner-up. Shawn Rhoden, Mark Alvisi and Mike Liberatore rounded out the top five.

In the 202, Guy Cisternino prevailed over Fernando Noronha Almeida and Tricky Jackson. The young Cisternino won his first pro show and should have a shot at the top six at the Olympia if he can bring the same conditioning to Las Vegas.

In the pro figure category, the gorgeous Ava Cowan won with Deena Walsh second and Ellas Horton third.

Natalie Pennington took first in the pro bikini, followed by Jessica Jessie and Sonia Gonzalez.

2011 IFBB Europa Super Show Dallas Competitors Lists

The dog days of summer have been baking the entire country and it will get even hotter in Texas this weekend with another great IFBB show promoted by Betty Pariso. The 2011 Europa Super Show will pit a well-rounded line-up in the men’s open that features the X-Man Toney Freeman, Mark Alvisi, Mike Liberatore and Shawn Rhoden.

The 202 division gets to share the big stage, as well as the women in figure, fitness and bikini.

A Rich Gaspari Comeback Would Give Masters Bodybuilding a Boost

A trek to Venice Beach can inspire a wide variety of people to get in the best of shape. Even a retired bodybuilding champion whose name graces the top supplement line can get the bug again by spending some time there. That apparently is the case when Rich Gaspari attended the Muscle Beach Hall of Fame ceremony recently.

“Being back in Venice Beach after all these years, I was inspired to get back in shape,” Gaspari wrote in his blog on June 24th. ‘The Dragon Slayer’ then set up a cover photo shoot for Iron Man Magazine and another shoot with Hidetada Yamagishi (one of his Gaspari Nutrition athletes) for Muscular Development.

At 48, Gaspari is still young enough to get back on stage in some capacity. “Who knows how far I will take this?” he continued. “Featured Guest Poser Rich Gaspari? You never know.”

Guest posing is definitely something that would be a big attraction in the sport and Gaspari may even take it a step further. The Masters Division is something that has not garnered a lot of interest the past few years, but adding a name like Gaspari can give it a boost.

The IFBB Pro World Masters Championship is being held in Miami in December and some famous names have already committed. Ronnie Coleman, Samir Bannout, Dexter Jackson, Stan Frydrych, Andreas Cahling, Chris Cormier, Pavol Jablonicky, Roland Czuirlock, Toney Freeman, Troy Alves, Dennis James, Darrem Charles, Gary Strydom, Lee Apperson, Bill Wilmore and Lawrence Hunt are competing. An impressive line-up will be even bigger if Gaspari jumped on board.

Only time will tell if Gaspari takes this comeback all the way.

Confirmed Gary Strydom Comeback a Smart Business Decision

After much speculation, it finally appears that Gary Strydom will in fact be coming back to competitive bodybuilding at the IFBB Pro World Masters Championship on December 10, 2011 at the Fillmore in Miami Beach. The legendary South African confirmed this during a video interview with Shawn Ray of Musclular Development on April 15 at the FIBO show in Germany.

“Confirmation one hundred percent,” Strydom told Ray. “It is confirmed already. Signed, sealed and delivered (that) I’ll be there. So hopefully all of the other guys will be there and the show materializes.”

Some of those ‘other guys’ Strydom referred to just happen to include three former Mr. Olympia winners in Ronnie Coleman, Samir Bannout and Dexter Jackson. Also on the list are Vince Taylor (2001 Masters Olympia winner), Andreas Cahling, Chris Cormier, Pavol Jablonicky, Milos Sarcev, Toney Freeman, Troy Alves, Dennis Newman and Darrem Charles. Guest posers like Tom Platz, Robby Robinson, Tony Pearson and Juliette Bergman also jump off the page. This will be a very memorable evening, for sure.

The news of Strydom’s comeback is not much of a surprise, as the soon-to-be 51-year-old had announced that he was going to compete again back in 2009, as reported right here on MuscleSport Mag:

That did not materialize but this time it does seem genuine, as Strydom has a few business projects that will obviously benefit from his comeback. He has a supplement line called Strydom Professional Series and an upcoming launch of his own clothing line. Strydom has previous experience in the latter with Crazzee Wear, one of the most popular brands in and out of the gyms worldwide in the 1980s and 90s.

Two years ago, Strydom had visions of qualifying for the Mr. Olympia, but this appears to be a much better strategy. By going up against similar competitors, he has a good chance to place well and come full circle.
