The Death of Serge Nubret Brings Up More Family Poison Questions

A simple and short message on his official website may have summed it up, but hardly answered the questions that have been asked and should continue to be even more so now:

“Official Statement – We are sad to inform you the death of Serge Nubret. Serge has left us on April 19, 2011. The funeral will be held in Paris (Pere Lachaise) on April 29 at 2:10 PM. Meanwhile you can leave a message to his family following this link.    His children.”

Back in July of 2009, MuscleSport Mag posted an article entitled, The Serge Nubret Mystery Continues,” that was circulated worldwide throughout the Internet and resulted in us being contacted by someone who claimed to be close to the situation asking us to remove parts of the article for Nubret’s safety. With that being a moot point now, we have decided to reprint the entire article in it’s original form:

In this day and age of instant access and technology that can dispel rumors before they even get any legs, it is amazing that the situation concerning the health of a bodybuilding legend has been in doubt for months on end. Serge Nubret, 70, was reportedly training to make a guest posing appearance at this year’s Mr. Olympia contest before being found in a comatose state at his home in France on March 19, 2009. Nubret’s website included this official statement:

To cut a long story short and to stop the rumors available on the internet, we have decided to publish this official statement concerning Serge Nubret’s health state.

On March 19 2009, our father was discovered home, in a coma by firemen. He was immediately transfered to the Lariboisiere hospital. Since that, Serge Nubret is under the supervision of the hospital’s medical staff. For now, the diagnosis is a hypoglycemic coma probably due to a malfunction of the pancreas. The explorations continues while Serge Nubret is in rehabilitation. We will keep you informed of any change in its health state.

Meanwhile, we suspend the website. Thank you for your understanding and support.

His children.

He was hospitalized and then supposedly suffered a stroke, which was not confirmed. There was even a rumor that Nubret had passed away. Approximately a month later, a forum on the Quantum Touch website reported that he may have been poisoned and that his daughter was his primary care physician:

Hi. My friend, Serge Nubret was deliberately poisoned. His photo is my avatar. He is at Laribroisiere Hospital in France in the Toxicology Department. He has been sedated there for the past 4 weeks. No one is allowed to see him but the family…most of whom he does not trust.

He was in excellent health before. Now he’s in a strange hypnotic zombie state for no reason…like he’s all drugged up and does not recognize people some of the time. He should have been out of there after a few days. But he can not talk or eat or stay awake most of the time. He’s lost a lot of weight. There is no heart or brain damage. His daughter is one of his doctors who is keeping everyone away from him. She is an anethetist and was not on speaking terms with him, but now controls his health and won’t talk to anyone or let anyone see him. He is fighting for his life.

I stressed out so bad about it, I got shingles near my eyes and I need QT myself. I feel very badly about what is happening because it’s unbelievable and sad. Please Help! Send QT and prayer for healing and strength. Thank you so much. I will send my best energy, QT and prayers to all of these requests that I read as well! I’m just learning how to do it; it’s new to me.

A day later, the same forum member posted the following:

Today my friends in France filed a police report to investigate and move him out of there. I pray he will have the strength to survive until they can intervene.

And then on the Muscular Development forum, the following was reported as being from a “friend of Serge Nubret”:

Dear Friends of Serge,

Tommy and I are putting together a card to send to Serge from all of his
friends and fans to show him love and support. Serge has been in the hospital since March 18 when he was poisoned at Pascale’s apartment and sent to intensive care toxicology.

A police investigation has been going on for the past several weeks to fully examine all who were involved and the cover up at Lariboisiere Hospital (where Serge had been sedated/drugged into a state of coma/confused trance where he did not recognize anyone for over a month and could not move or talk).

His daughter, Karine, an anesthetist, was the doctor in charge of him. No one was allowed to see him. When the police became involved, Serge’s condition started to improve immediately–less than 24 hours later he started to recognize people again after the drugs/sedation were ceased.

He is still unable to talk or move very much. Police District 10 is not giving out much information right now because of protocol/security procautions; some of his family are currently under investigation.

Before Serge was poisoned, he was in one of the best conditions of his life. His physique looked similar to and weighed the same as it had decades earlier at his best.

Because he had no heart attack/stroke and his heart/brain MRI was also normal, we are hoping for recovery of memory and health and that there
is no permanent damage from being poisoned, drugged and sedated. Please send him positive energy and prayers.

Thank you.

The latest word came on July 17 when the forum included this post, supposedly from Nubret himself:

my children poisened me to take my money books and land

they drugging me so I canot talk and lies why i am here
i canot walk i dont want die in hopital
hopital know this and cover up everyting pleas get me out

We have reprinted all of the above posts in their original form, misspellings included.

What exactly happened to Nubret remains to be seen, but one thing that we know for sure is that he was training and looking fantastic for someone his age right before he was felled. The likely speculation was that Nubret was using performance-enhancing drugs for his ‘comeback,’ if you will, which caused him to become ill in the first place. Even if he was using anything, his possible grave present condition would appear to have more causes.

MuscleSport Mag has contacted the IFBB and the person who sent the information to Muscular Development asking for any details or at least clarification on what is and what is not true in this situation.

Nubret’s death at the age of 72 may give the impression that the book is closed, but that is the exact opposite. The condition that he has been in for over two years made his passing something that did not come as a surprise, but nonetheless it should elicit a strong response.

If a crime was in fact committed, then that needs to be revealed and the person(s) responsible deserve to get what it coming to them. Poisoning at worst or neglect at best may have occurred here and Nubret’s family should want to clear their names if that is in fact not the truth.

It works both ways – they should be outed and punished if they did wrong here, as well as apologized to and given condolences for the loss of their father if they are totally innocent. However you look at it, the only way we can get to either place is to have the questions answered.

With the funeral to be held 10 days following his death, does that mean an autopsy was done during that extended period of time? What is the official cause of death? Has this been looked at by the French authorities? Has the Medical Examiner (or the French equivalent) deemed the death ‘non-suspicious?’

These are just a few questions that are obvious ones and we will do our part as a media outlet to press the right people for answers.

This is tragic news. What evidence is there for poison? Is or was there a police investigation? Why did members of his family refuse to allow visitors to Serge when he was in hospital?

Please contact me if anyone has answers to these questionsa.

Any update on this? Terrible to see him go and even worse if this is true. If the message was truly written by him, I would hope for the worst end for whoever did it to him.

You are probably the last hope I have of findinf out the truth.
Surprisingly, in the Information age, it IS possible to contain such critical information!

This is all so much nonsense!
Serge Nubret had been suffering from the effect of decades of drug abuse and finally his old body could not tolerate the abuse anymore.
I saw him many times on my trips to Paris and it was apparent, that he was not in good health. Increasing doses of many different steroids coupled with growth hormone and insulin abuse as well as DNP and Clen finally put the last nails in the coffin, but as usual the bodybuilding community is in denial and continues to worship more and more deformed drug addicts.

The odds of a non-diabetic suddenly lapsing into a hypo coma are very, very low. A younger man would have probably survived. A 70 yr old probably wouldn’t, as Serge didn’t unfortuneatly.

Serge’s death reminds me how the use of drugs for bodybuilding purposes is fundamentally. All you end up doing is lowering your own production and if suppressed long enough the body will cease it’s own independent production. There are thousands of idiots who must use for the rest of their lives.

how truly wonderful that surge nubret was able to the thing he loved to 72 years old, and make a success from it. He was a amazing man to view especially for his young day , and a inspiration to millions all over the world. He may have use substances to enhance his performance, but few could use substances and achieve or be motivated to do as he did. he was a dream. a dream people didnt know about, a dream people didnt think possible. good luck to all people who dream and God blesses for all to see and witness!

FWIW… I communicated with Serge’s daughter, Pascale, when I first heard the rumor that he was in a coma. She confirmed that her father had come out of the coma and was in therapy to get back his motor skills. My opinion is that if Serge actually did pen a note that he was being drugged and held captive, he most likely did so in a demented state. Dementia is common in this state. Here is an eemail exchange I had with Serge’s daughter in Paris:

my email asking her if there was any truth to the rumor her father was in a coma:

J’ai entendu une rumeur triste q’ t’ père est dans un coma à un hôpital de Paris. Est-ce que c’est vrai ? Je suis un BIG FAN d’t’père. Quand j’ai habite’ à Paris j’ai cherché pour son gym (l’arrondissiment St. Louis) mais il était longtemps fermé. Peux-tu m’dire si cette rumeur est vrai? Et s’il est, comment est t’ père fait? t’es dans mes prières avec t’ père!

    Paix & amour d’ Chicago!

Her response (if you don’t speak french she basically is saying that her father is in rehab learning everyday motor skills after coming out of the coma and that he is a prisoner of “his own body”, not his “family” and that he could not speak. She’s says it’s a very difficult time for Serge and tells me where he is and what hours I could see him):

    “Bjr Gary,

I can’t believe there is even a story on this, all because of some forum posts no less. The guy died and he was/is a great legend. Let’s remember him for who he was and not some bullshit story made up by an author trying to make a name for himself and the website he works for. Let the man be.

I’m not happy about this. I’ll try to find who the investigating detectives were in Paris and speak to them myself. I will also see about obtaining a copy of Serge’s death certificate and go from there.

None of this adds up to a death from natural causes.

In my career I have photographed many hundreds of bodybuilders. In the Golden Age of Bodybuilding — the Best Age of Bodybuilding — Serge was the best, the most symmetrical, the most statuesque, the finest.

Guys, this story is found out to be untrue. Serge Nubret is an inspiration to all fitness enthusiasts around the world. His book will most likely be published in english this year and it will be available through his official website and amazon. For now, keep training and remember Serge for all the good advice he gave his fans on all the bodybuilding forums from 2006 until 2009. Both of his daughters paid for Serge to be cared for in hospital and then a care home outside Paris. All rumours pertaining to any malevolence against him was totally false, it all started from a woman that was infatuated with Serge and made up delusions that caught on and spread like wild fire, but still untrue. Serge dedicated his entire life of 72 years to bodybuilding and represents the qualities such as dedication, leadership, motivation and the right mental attitude to become a champion athlete. His legacy is an eternal flame in the industry.

With the amounts of steroids he used over his life, its a miracle he crossed 60, let alone 70. He poisoned himself, let him RIP.

Serge was my trainer from 1994-95 in Rio Rancho, NM USA. I will not comment on the use of any performance enhancing drugs because I never saw him using any drugs and he never omitted to the use of drugs. However he was inspirational to me and motivated me to train harder than I ever had before and to finish school and obtain my degree as a Respiratory Therapist. God Bless You Serge. You will be remembered.

    Guys, this is Serge,

I thoroughly appreciate the support extended to me and the concern expressed for my health. I can assure you that I am ok. My old rivals Arnold and Sergio, with the backing Joe, having becoming aware of my plight, hatched a plan to break me out of the hospital where I had been staying. Once out of the hospital we absconded to Australia, where we’ve been hanging out on the beaches with Elvis and Bruce Lee every since. Life is
    grand guys; live it up.

There was a time back in the 80s when I was trying to make an impact on steroid use in body building and sports. Was working with Serge to promote a concentrated food/herbal supplement. During this time he ended up in the hospital near death. He told me it was because of Growth Hormone and that he would not use that again. He talked a lot about eating whole foods and as a future dietitian that was the message I wanted to get out, but had also heard from other body builders that most all outside “natural” competition used steroids because you have to or cannot compete against another athlete that is using. Steroids can make or break getting an athletic contract and getting out of poverty. Tough choices. Never forgot his words.

I knew Serge Nubret. He did not take “a lot” of steroïds. He tried to make a comeback at 70 and, ironically, had written a book about how “to be in great shape at 70.” He was in very good shape but at one moment, when he began his dieting phase, very hard, very professional, removing sugar was too much for his body, affected his brain and he had an accident. Nubret probably did not die because of fifty years of bodybuilding but because the dieting was too much, very dangerous for 70 years old brain, heart and muscles, even if the guy was in quite good health. Dieting like that could kill a 35 years old Munzer, or a 35 years Benaziza. One year before his death, Nubret was not in bad shape or health, but he had bad knees and hips, he had a hip replacement. Sadly, this fine gentleman, very intelligent and sympathetic, with such a good physique, sense of humor, and so on, died because he followed this foolish diet. Behind his apparent great shape, he finished in very poor health.
Today, in 2017, the first French Guadeloupean Mr Universe, Arthur Robin, who won in 1957 the NABBA pro Mr Universe and was 9 years older than Nubret, continues to enjoy at 89 a retirement (from show business) in Italy. He was a pre-steroids bodybuilder… I have seen photos of him at 80. Fantastic!!
Conclusion: train, eat good food, eat correctly, don’t kill yourself.
