LeBron, Wade, Bosh and Melo – NBA Free Agency Extravaganza
- Updated: July 1, 2014
When Carmelo Anthony opted out of his contract with the New York Knicks, he must have planned on being the biggest fish in the free agency sea. But before he even knew it, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh did the same and the entire landscape of the NBA may look entirely different by the time next season rolls around.
The Miami Heat may go from an almost-dynasty to resembling their original expansion team if all three superstars leave. Of course, this could all be a strategy to bleed the Heat dry of the maximum contracts they can offer their own free agents now that July 1 is upon us.
When James negotiated with Miami back in 2010, he was willing to take less money than the Cleveland Cavaliers could offer because he obviously wanted to pair with Wade and leave enough salary cap space for the team to also bring in Bosh. But that shipped has apparently run its course, even though Miami won two titles with this core group.
If the Heat signs James to a max contract (projected to be approximately $20.7 million per year), then they will not be able to do the same for the other two star players. Bosh is younger than Wade, but the former has been with the organization for 11 years and is their heart and soul. Even with past injury problems, Wade is still only 32.
The Knicks would like to retain their perennial All-Star but he is planning on meeting with the Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks. It will be interesting to see if the Big Three from Miami have a direct impact on where and what Melo earns.
