Complied by Tim Tibbs – Before I introduce myself, I want to give a big shout out to MIX IT UP SPORTS and MUSCLE SPORT MAGAZINE. Thanks Tim!

Hello!  My name is Derina Wilson and I’m from Long Island, New York. I was in elite gymnast at the age of 13 with Olympic dreams!  After my highly competitive gymnastics career, I participated in cheerleading, dance, volleyball, fencing, and received a scholarship for diving at Queens College.  At the age of 21, I received certifications in both Yoga and Pilates. I have been teaching both Yoga and Pilates for the past 15 years at gyms  around Suffolk and Nassau County as well as Fire Island.  I instruct in group classes as well as private/group private lessons.  Last year I completed my Booty Barre  certification and am currently completing my AFAA group exercise certification.

On November 26, 2015 my father passed away at the age of 64 with kidney failure. After falling into a depression, I needed to follow my heart and my dreams of becoming a fitness model and decided to sign up for my first NPC fitness competition under my coach Lena Squarciafico-Mishin. I competed in my first competition, the Garden State Championships and received first place!  I qualified for nationals where at NPC universe I won both first place overall and first place in class, and earned my IFBB pro card. As a sponsored athlete for Bill Romanowski’s Nutrition53, I competed in my first IFBB pro fitness show in Florida the Wings Of Strength Tampa Pro where I came in 7th out of 14 in 2015.
2016 was my first full season competing as an IFBB Pro.  I took 4th place at the Wings Of Strength Chicago Pro, 2nd place at the Europa Games, and 9th place at the Wings Of Strength Tampa Pro.  Right now I am 4th place in the point standings for an Olympia qualification…so fingers crossed I will be in Las Vegas this September.
Along with my fitness career, I have been fulfilling my fitness modeling dream and working with a variety of athletic wear companies….and although I no longer coach gymnastics, I have been enjoying  choreographing floor routines for our future Olympians!
