The Benefits of CBD for Athletes

Athletes place a lot of stress on their bodies on a daily basis. Training often stresses the muscles, but it is this that leads to an increased performance over time.  While current methods of pain relief are effective for dealing with the majority of injuries athletes encounter, many are looking for more natural options of relief.  One of the options many are considering is CBD.  But is this a good option?  In this article, we’ll take a look at the main benefits of CBD for athletes.

1. It’s a Good Alternative to Opioids

While opioid pain medications like oxycontin, codeine, and morphine are highly effective at combatting pain, they’re also highly addictive as well and carry a risk of overdose.  In fact, 42,000 deaths in the US were labelled as being caused by opioids in 2016.  While CBD isn’t as effective at treating high intensity pain, many athletes find that it is more than suitable for the kind of pain they’re experiencing, and it is also effective for long-term pain management.  Those who are interested in long-term pain relief will want to look at getting CBD isolate wholesale here.

2. It’s a Good Alternative to NSAIDs

NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as Advil and ibuprofen are often taken by athletes as a way to reduce pain. However, when taken on a regular basis, they’re not as safe as was once thought.  Not only can they increase your risk of renal damage, but they can also increase the risk of strokes and heart attacks.  CBD is increasingly being seen as a safer option for long-term or frequent use, and has many of the same pain relieving properties as NSAIDs.

3. It Can Help Improve Sleep Quality

In order to achieve greater training gains, athletes need to ensure that they get a lot of peaceful sleep each night.  Research has shown that CBD can help athletes to not only fall asleep, but also to achieve a more restful sleep as well.  This is thought to be because of the way CBD helps to inhibit the reuptake of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).  In addition, CBD also aids with anxiety in some people, which is something else that can help to achieve a more peaceful night’s sleep.

4. It Reduces Inflammation

While a little bit of inflammation can be good for athletes because it helps to stimulate training adaptations, too much can hurt performance and lead to a long period of recovery.  While there are CBD receptors in the brain, they tend to be more concentrated in the immune tissues.  When an athlete takes CBD, the cannabidiol binds to these receptors, providing an anti-inflammatory effect.  This can help to dial down the response of the immune system following a hard workout, leading to shorter recovery times and lower amounts of pain.

While it’s definitely important to monitor what you put into your body as an athlete, cannabidiol is a legal alternative to the most common pain medication that has many benefits.
