EUROPEAN SOCCER RETURNS TO STADIUM FOR FIRST TIME IN FIVE YEARS

Yankee Stadium today announced that current UEFA Champions League semi-finalist Liverpool FC will face Sporting Club of Portugal in a preseason friendly match on Wednesday, July 24 at 8:00 p.m.

Yankees season ticket licensees and Yankees group leaders, along with select supporters groups and season ticketholders from the two clubs, will be able to take part in special presales beginning on Monday, May 6. Tickets will be available via a general public on-sale on Thursday, May 9, at 10:00 a.m. at yankees.com, yankeesbeisbol.com and Ticketmaster TTY at (800) 943-4327.

Founded in 1892, Liverpool FC is one of the world’s most famous soccer clubs having won 18 domestic league titles, seven FA Cups, eight League Cups, five European Cups, three UEFA Cups, three European Super Cups and 15 Charity/Community Shields. Their five European championships are tied with Barcelona and Bayern Munich for the third-most all time, trailing only Real Madrid (13) and AC Milan (7).

This will mark Liverpool’s second appearance at the current Yankee Stadium, having defeated Manchester City in a penalty shootout on July 30, 2014. That contest finished 2-2 in regulation time with Liverpool goals from Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling. Additionally, on June 14, 1953, Liverpool played to a 1-1 tie with Young Boys of Switzerland at the original Yankee Stadium as Billy Liddell provided a second-half equalizer for the Reds.

The July match will be Sporting’s first appearance at either the current or original Yankee Stadium.

Soccer has been a staple of the current Yankee Stadium, which has served as the home of New York City Football Club (NYCFC) since 2015. Prior to NYCFC’s inception, the Stadium hosted a number of high profile friendly matchups, including those listed below:
