The Importance of Sticking to a Fitness Regimen When Building Muscle

Building muscle takes time. There’s just no substitute for diligence when you’re trying to get into tip-top meat man muscle condition. Don’t believe the hype around special products with wacko chemicals that are supposed to beef you up in a matter of weeks, and definitely do noteven thinkabout cosmetic surgery to gain muscle. Nothing compares to the real thing, and the real thing takes time. That’s why it’s so important to stick to a solid fitness regimen when building muscle. Here are the three keys to a muscle-building regimen.

Step Number 1: Hit. The. Gym.

If you’re gaining muscle, you’re going to need to work out consistently. There’s just no other option.  Working different muscle groups on different days is the best way to ensure that you’re keeping up a solid gym routine and building muscle consistently throughout the week. First, let’s settle a debate though. A little cardio is totally fine while you’re bulking, and can even be great for keeping fat off and your heart healthy. Pick up some men’s running shoes and go for a jog here and there – don’t worry, you’re not going to lose out on gains.

A solid starting workout for guys and dudes trying to get large is the 5×5 workout. It’s simple, clean, and guaranteed to get you absolutely enormous if you’re consistent about it. There are two workout series: an A day and a B day.

On your A days:

  • 5 sets of 5 squats,
  • 5 sets of 5 bench presses
  • 5 sets of 5 barbell rows.

On your B days:

  • 5 sets of 5 squats
  • 5 sets of 5 overhead press
  • 5 sets of 1 deadlift.

Stagger your A days and B days so that one week, Monday and Friday are your A days, and Wednesday is your B day. Then the next week, swap it so that Wednesday is your A day.

It’s absolutely vital that you keep up a solid routine like this to build muscle.

Key Number 2: Eat Right

You are what you eat – literally, your body has to build your new muscle mass out of something, right? Well, that something is the stuff you’re eating throughout your day. It’s important to keep up a healthy and protein-packed diet in order to continuously build muscle. One rule of thumb is that you should eat half your weight in grams of protein per day. This is a good approach if you’re really trying to bulk.

Eating a little above the normal 2000 calories per day is recommended for building bulk, too. However, it matters what you eat. 80 grams of protein and 2300 calories can take many different forms, and if you keep finding yourself scarfing down fast food and junk, you’re not just going to gain muscle, you’ll gain fat. Plus, with all those chemicals and additives they’re packing into foods these days, you don’t even know what you’re stuffing 2300 calories of down your gullet.

One good option to keep your eating clean is to try out plant-based protein alternatives. Not only are there plenty of awesome plant-based options out there for you to indulge in while still eating clean, your heart will be much better off for it. Eating the amount of meat you’d need to in order to get to your target weight will have some seriously rough consequences for the old ticker. Subbing out at least half of your spare rib or steak dinners for protein-packed meat alternatives is a great way to ensure that as you bulk, you’re also doing it in a healthy and sustainable way for your body.

Key Number 3: Keep a Balanced Lifestyle

Running might not be killing your gains, but all that partying and drinking probably is. If you find that you’re hitting the clubs and going a little too hard too often, you might also find that your workout schedule is suffering. A little drinking and a night out late once a week never hurt anyone, but you don’t want to mess with your body’s natural ability to build muscle. Sleep is one of the most important times for building muscle, so if you’re out late every night living it up, your body doesn’t have time to put those proteins to action and build your mass.
