You will probably have heard of a bootcamp, whether in the military sense or the type run through fitness centers, but if you’ve never thought of the term and how it relates to you, here’s your chance to view this exercise trend in a whole new light.

Why A BootCamp?

If you are type who enjoys a challenge, or the type of person who shudders at the very thought of going into a gym, then bootcamp is a fantastic way to amp up the motivation levels! Because they are short sessions, usually 4 – 8 weeks long, you actually see results very quickly, and you have a sudden energy burst. Also, because they are usually held pretty early in the morning, if you’re not a morning person then you’ve finished your workout before you’ve really woken up properly, and it is an amazing way to start your day.

Take a Langley Boot-camp for example. You will find yourself amongst a group of really supportive people, of varying fitness levels, of all shapes and sizes, with one primary thing in common, they want better for themselves.

It is the sense of comradery that tends to really surprise people when they first head along to a group training session, and why you will often hear people say that they have attended multiple boot camps. Not because they haven’t worked, but because they are one of the absolute best ways to get really motivated and to power through your fitness or weight loss goals.

Although you may be a little nervous about what you will encounter, or even if you will be able to get through the first session, because there is usually a mix of first timers and old veterans, you will find yourself in a really supportive environment. The pros who have done one before, know exactly what you’re going through and what is going on in your head, and they will be more than happy to share any tips or tricks that got them through the first time.

What Are Your Goals?

Although, to be perfectly honest, it doesn’t really matter what your goals are when you are looking at joining in on a fitness class of any sort, having goals that are clear in your own mind help you to stay motivated (see here).

While many people have goals like they want to be able to fit into an item of clothing that is sitting in their wardrobe, or they want to get fitter so they will live long enough to see their grandchildren, you reasoning can be as simple or as detailed as you want. All that matters is that your reasoning is enough to get you out of bed and moving. Maybe you have a special event coming up, maybe you want to look amazing so that your ex (who you don’t want back) regrets letting you go, maybe you want to have a more energetic sex life – if you can find an honest reason that really resonates with you it will be easier to develop a fitter, healthier you.

I’m Not Fit Enough!

This is one of the beautiful things about this method of fitness training, the exercises use your own body weight and natural resistance, so you are fit enough. In fact, most are easily adaptable to be accessible for almost anyone. The thing that you absolutely must remember is that the only person you are competing against is yourself. The person who is using group fitness as a training method to get prepared for a marathon has different goals that the person who gets puffed walking from their lounge room to their bathroom.

You will find that exercises are generally timed, this means if you can only walk one lap while someone else has just sprinted 5 times around, that is perfectly fine. You know what is really awesome… you have just walked almost an entire lap! Go you!! No, you don’t need to be able to do one handed push-ups, and you might not even be able to do one push up at the end of the session, but you will be significantly closer than you ever dreamed possible.

One thing before you do start any program is to consult with your doctor if you have any medical issues – this includes pregnancy, miscarriage or if you have given birth in the last 12 months (even with no complications).

I’m Too Fit To Get Anything Out Of Group Fitness

As above, one of the key things about a group fitness session is that primary person you are competition against is yourself. If you now that you could have done 20 burpees in the time that it took you to do 15, but you didn’t push yourself, that is 100% on you. Look at some of the top sports teams in the world, their primary method of training is in a group session https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=12012470. While they are professional athletes, so their sessions tend to go for longer than most group fitness classes or camps, the principle is the same.

Working out with a group helps you to stay focused and motivated, even if you are the ‘best’, fastest or strongest in the class. One of the things that you will need to ensure is that you stay that way, because all too quickly the others who are just as dedicated will have put in the same amount of time and energy into their sessions, and before you know it you will have some serious competition.
