XFL Attendance & Ratings – Week 1

The new incarnation of the XFL kicked off this weekend and the ‘numbers’ (the ones that will determine if this spring football league can be a viable one that lasts longer than one season) were promising. Being carried by major television networks (ABC, ESPN, FOX) was a big boost and the ratings were impressive, thus making the attendance – which was certainly not bad, but should have been better – not appear as important.

RELATED: NEW SET OF RULES FOR XFL 2020

Viewership was very encouraging and the caliber of play on the field – along with the esoteric rule book – will certainly be the subject of much water cooler banter in the coming days. That will hopefully, in turn, result in even higher ratings moving forward. The gimmickless games were also an important factor and fans knew right away that XFL 2020 was a stark difference from the 2001 version, which was full of bells and whistles from the WWE. League owner Vince McMahon is taking a back seat this time around and that is a good thing to the average sports fan.
