How To Cope With the Difficulty of Physical Rehab

Physical therapy, or PT, is a discipline that concentrates on the rehabilitation of physically disabled or injured patients. It may include such activities as walking on a treadmill, running, helpful exercises and even swimming. It can also be most beneficial for those who have been seriously hurt due to car accidents and other traumatic events.

Physical therapy also incorporates the more popularly known treatments such as massage therapy, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy. It is one of today’s most allied health careers that involves clinical, kinesiological, rehabilitation, education and mobilization, and physical rehabilitation. It aims to aid individuals who have suffered from accidents, diseases, traumatic injuries, birth defects, or congenital deformities.

  • Purpose of Physical Rehab

The basic aim of physical rehabilitation is to improve a patient’s condition, in terms of physical performance and functionality. Physical therapy aims to restore a patient’s health through improving physical functions such as walking and standing, bending, running, and general movement of the body. Physical rehabilitation is a vital step in improving the physical health status of an individual who has been hurt or injured.

In order for a muscle to heal and become stronger, there should be some resistance for the fibers to stretch and grow. This can be extremely uncomfortable and possibly annoying, but it is necessary. This is what’s called good pain. It is the strengthening of endurance for your muscles and your body. There may even be the sensation of a burn in the muscles from the soreness of exercising. Bad pain, however, comes from the pain and discomfort of performing an activity. It means that the body has been damaged or irritated due to some kind of improper technique or overuse.

It is best to see a professional if pain occurs during an activity or accident so you can work on a recovery plan. Trying to design your own healing method can aggravate the injury and worsen the pain.

Daily pain from an accident or injury can cause a form of depression for almost anyone. Some patients find this more unbearable than the actual injury. It can be diagnosed as chronic pain. It will start softly and slowly, but then it can become exasperating and fully excruciating as negative thoughts come and go.

The mere thought of not being able to do what comes naturally, or continue to function properly on a day-to-day basis can wreak havoc on a person’s mental health. Pain can elevate the hormones to run rampantly, thereby adding to the fear and anxiety. With the uncertainty of working through an illness or worsening an injury, it is only normal that certain anxieties will attack, and result to confusion and problems during physical therapy.

One of the most difficult problems about physical therapy is the fact that when someone is suffering from depression or anxiety, this anxiety can cause more physical pain. Different types of anxiety include separation anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorders, certain phobias, and even obsessive-compulsive disorders. All of these disorders can complicate any healing from physical therapy and may contribute to other physical issues.

These symptoms may include headaches, insomnia, fatigue or weakness, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, stomach aches, excessive sweating, shaking, and excess muscle pain or tension. With all of these symptoms being added to the body, it makes it extremely difficult for anyone to heal or think that nothing good is happening.

More issues can arise when a patient is experiencing panic attacks. The indicators are chest pains, trouble breathing, tingling or numbing sensations, dizziness or lightheadedness. There is the feeling of being chilled or overheated, and the unexplainable fear of death.

Anxiety is the body’s response to stress, and nothing can be more stressful than the uncertainty of healing and not being to take care of yourself or your loved ones. When this aspect of not being able to take care of yourself is threatened, your body heads into a danger region and you begin get nervous and act irrationally. This can cause hyperventilation and the most common reaction is the fight or flight response. This is also not conducive to the successful healing or rejuvenation that comes with physical therapy.

The good news is physical therapy can help reduce stress and anxiety. Certain therapies, such as message therapy can drastically reduce the amount of cortisol in the body. Cortisol is a hormone in the body that regulates your metabolism. Therapy can soothe the hormones which induces anxiety, thereby eliminating the stress and bringing peace to the body. This, in turn, can manifest better results with other physical therapy sessions.

Physical therapy can also help with anxiety through the actual physical exercises. There are treatments that enhance natural breathing and help to soothe rapid breathing or insomnia. With the proper guidance and therapy sessions, not only can a patient be helped with the basic injury but also with any grievances due to stress or anxiety.

Physical rehabilitation is beneficial for physically disabled persons and those who have suffered injuries through accidents or illnesses. As professionals gain more knowledge and experience, they are able to better understand how to teach their patients to live independently and move around on their own. These same patients may also be able to participate in activities that they did not have the opportunity to do in the past, due to their new mobility and strength. The whole purpose of physical rehab is to guide an injured person to be able to understand their problem, learn how to work it in new ways, and be able to operate living daily with or without the support of others.

There are a number of physical rehabilitation centers that provide all the appropriate classes and exercise sessions for someone to heal. These centers are built for children, young adults, veterans, college professors, housewives, construction workers, senior citizens and more. Though physical therapy can often be daunting, and often painful, it is not something that should be ignored medically or emotionally. The purpose is to heal the body and possibly heal the mind as well.
