With David Beckham installed as the club’s President, there was always going to be huge interest in Inter Miami FC as they made their entrance into MLS. In the end, their debut season was a modest one but there were signs during that initial campaign that Miami are among the clubs to watch in 2021.

With some small tweaks to the roster, Beckham’s side may just make significant improvements in the new season and few would rule them out in terms of ultimate MLS success.

Solid Showing

At least Inter Miami made it beyond the regular season and into the playoff stages in 2020. After a slow start to life in North America’s biggest soccer league, coach Diego Alonso’s side finished in tenth place in the Eastern Conference and that was enough for the team to progress to the playoffs play-in round.

The journey didn’t last much longer: Inter were dispatched by a 3-0 scoreline at the hands of Nashville SC in that very first knockout match and their campaign came to an abrupt end. It was a solid start to life as a professional soccer club but that debut season wasn’t exactly spectacular. Finishing tenth out of 14 sides is a modest return and we should also remember that Miami finished bottom of their MLS is back group with three straight defeats.

Those are stark statistics so why are many pundits talking up Inter Miami’s chances in 2021?

Miami Rated

Early betting markets as supplied by Legalbetting.com show Inter Miami in a mid-range price for the 2021 MLS Cup. Among the favorites are last year’s Champions Columbus Crew while beaten finalists Seattle Sounders have featured regularly in the latter stages and are widely tipped to add to their impressive trophy cabinet.

LegalBetting supply market options for a wide range of major sporting events while advising on which sportsbooks are open to customers in the United States. As the MLS approaches, those betting odds will start to fluctuate and the market will remain open until such time as the winners are declared. There are lots of alternatives at shorter prices but are Inter Miami a good bet for glory in this upcoming season?

Key Men

Some of the greats of world football have spent their latter playing days in MLS. Outsiders unkindly suggest that they’re here for one last big payday but most players in this category have given everything for the cause. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, David Villa and Robbie Keane are among those who have enjoyed prolific careers Stateside so it was natural to see great excitement among Inter Miami fans when Gonzalo Higuain joined the franchise. A veteran striker, the Argentinian international has returned some impressive scoring stats in a long career that has taken in major clubs such as Real Madrid, Juventus and AC Milan.

Unfortunately, Higuain couldn’t quite convert those productive returns with his new club and, in his first nine games for Miami, he scored just once. Over the course of his career, however, Higuain has scored over 300 senior goals and, if he adjusts to life in Miami and starts to reproduce his best form, Higuain can certainly provide the firepower to take his club to greater heights.

Beckham and his staff will also be looking for new recruits during the close season. Firstly, he needs to replace the outgoing Diego Alonso who has left the coaches’ position after just one campaign. Reports suggest that Phil Neville, who played with David Beckham at Manchester United, will come in to fill the vacancy.

Everton goalkeeper Jonas Lossl is among the names linked with a move but it’s likely to be quiet until the new coach steps in. Once the position is filled, expect a busy period for Inter Miami in the transfer market and one that might just precede a successful season.
