How to Maintain Your Hair While on Steroids

By Jonny Bravo – Hair is often an overlooked physical feature that helps maintain a youthful appearance as men age. By the age of 50, more than 85% of men have significantly thinning hair. Androgenetic alopecia/male pattern baldness accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men. With the combination of using anabolic steroids and the already existing genetic predisposition of hair loss in men, matters can be even worse. However, there are preventative measures along with using simple science which can help prevent or lessen the degree of hair loss which I have used over the years to maintain my hair while using anabolics.

The first thing to understand is what causes hair loss. DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is an enzyme that converts from excess testosterone, is the main reason why men lose their hair as they age. DHT attacks the hair follicles in the scalp and causes the follicles hair to shrink over time until it will it will no longer produce hair.

When you add any form exogenous testosterone in the body – especially at the dosages that bodybuilders use to gain muscle – these affects are highly magnified. They are even more increased when using DHT based steroids such as Masteron, Wintstol, etc. as opposed to Deca, Primobolan and Anavar.

So, the key is to prevent excess DHT in the scalp. But how? There have been FDA-approved drugs which have been scientifically proven to do just this. Propecia (finasteride) is one method which in pill form taken at 1mg a day not only stops DHT from attacking the follicles, but also helps ones that were attacked regain their strength, which in turn restores some of your original hair. Rogaine is another drug that works the same way, except it is used topically as to opposed to pill form. Nizoral is also another option, which is as a shampoo.

Now you ask yourself which option is best? The thing to think about is how far along is your hair loss. As a preventive measure, Propecia alone can be used to prevent or slow down hair loss on its own. I have been using Propecia since I was 23 years old and now at 39, I have not lost a hair since the day I took my first pill. If your hair loss is further along, the combination of Rogaine/Nizoral and Propecia may be a better method.

The dosage of Propecia at 1mg a day should be increased to 2mg a day if any more than 200mg of testosterone is used per week. The 1mg dosage was tested in individuals with normal testosterone levels, so those of a bodybuilder would need to be increased to 2-3mg per day based upon how much or the type of anabolics that are being used.

So, the keys in maintaining your hair as you age and use exogenous testosterone-based compounds is to start a preventative DHT protocol and stay away from DHT-based steroids, which can do a number on your hair line. As far as side effects go, studies have shown sexual side effects in less than 2% of men. I have never had any side effects using Propecia for over 18 years and maintain a full head of hair till this day.

Lastly, whichever form of DHT preventative protocol you use, it must be taken for as long as you want to keep the hair that you prevented being lost. So, if you want to keep your hair never discontinue use of the drug.
