Tinkers To Evers To Chance – First Time Ever For Cubs Sept. 1, 1902
- Updated: August 31, 2021

Baseball fans with a sense of nostalgia certainly know that one of the best double play combos of all time was on the Chicago Cubs with Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers and Frank Chance all starting together for the first time (albeit in slightly different positions than the ones they are famous for). This took place on this day back in 1902 in the first game of a doubleheader between the then-Orphans and Philadelphia Phillies at the Baker Bowl in downtown Philly. The teams ended up splitting the matinee twin bill.
The Orphans finished in fifth place in the National League with a 68-69-6 record, while the Phils had another long season (56-81-1), finishing seventh out of eight.
