The Kansas City Athletics were not very successful on the field and at the gate during the summer of 1965 and as part of a promotion on this day in baseball – September 8, 1965 – Bert Campaneris became the first player in Major League Baseball history to play all nine positions in the field in a single game. While pitching, the ambidextrous ‘Campy’ used both arms in the singe inning he was on the mound and gave up one run, two walks and had a strikeout. He did not pitch long enough to get the decision in a 5-3 win over the California Angels in a 13-inning affair at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City, who placed last in the American League that year with a hapless 59-103 record.

The natural shortstop played 19 seasons in the big leagues, the first 13 for the A’s in Kansas City and Oakland. Campaneris also played for the Texas Rangers, California Angels and New York Yankees and finished with a .259 career batting average, 2,249 hits and 649 stolen bases (led the AL six times). He also is a three-time World Series champion, six-time All-Star and has been inducted into the A’s Hall of Fame.
