What Is OCD and Is It Manageable?

OCD is a chronic condition that can make one feel extremely bad throughout their life. Of course, there are times when such people feel better, but such moments are temporary. So, when they get anxious and feel bad, they engage in repetitive behaviors which they believe makes them feel better.  OCD requires intervention that includes treatment and management to help the patient overcome the condition. It also requires the patient to make some behavioral changes to enable them to experience more pleasant moments. Obsessive compulsive disorder is a condition that interferes with brain function resulting in disturbing and recurring fears, doubts, thoughts, and urges to do something. In most cases, it results in repetitive actions that compel the victim into repeating behaviors such as washing hands or saying a prayer.

Since OCD is a neurobiological disorder that interferes with how the brain functions, it requires some specialized intervention to help deal with the condition. For instance, a patient obsessed with washing their hands must undergo some behavioral change to help them reduce the urge to indulge in compulsive activity. Here are tips for parents on how to manage the disorder.

1. Accept that OCD is a treatable condition

The first step towards managing OCD is to accept that the condition exists and that it is manageable. It motivates the patient to seek help from an expert. Consulting an ERP is the first thing you must do in trying to manage the condition.

2. Help them to think positively

Feeling bad throughout one’s life does not help you. Instead, it hurts the victim. Therefore, the patient must learn how to overcome it so that they feel much better. They must take steps to help them feel better. If they cannot think positively on their own, they may need to see an expert. They will take them through some behavioral changes so that they have more pleasant moments. 

3. Offering support

Your support is critical in managing OCD. But it should be deliberate and communicated to the patient. It would be best to let the person know that you understand why they are behaving in a particular way. It helps them feel less guilty. This is important since it reduces the level of guilt that is likely to lower self-esteem. Also, it reduces the level of anxiety and stress.  You may also encourage the person to freely discuss the disorder to understand how the condition affects them. It helps them learn what they can do to reduce feeling bad and why they should avoid engaging in compulsive behavior. 

4. Exposure and response prevention (ERP)

It is a type of treatment that is effective and which can be combined with medication such as clomipramine and serotonin reuptake inhibitors to make the patient feel much better.  ERP is a therapy that encourages the patient to become fearless. It allows the obsessive thoughts to occur, but the patient does not try to neutralize them with compulsions. It confronts situations that cause anxiety. Also, it helps the patient to tolerate anxiety.

Of course, there are other methods you can use to treat and manage OCD. But talking to the patient, using prescribed medications such as clomipramine and serotonin reuptake inhibitors. and ERP will help. In some cases, the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can give better results.
