Babe Ruth Pitches Complete Game 9 Years Removed From Mound – This Day in Baseball 10/28/30

As if it didn’t hurt enough, The Boston Red Sox had an anything-but-subtle reminder of ‘the one that got any.’ On this day in baseball back in 1930, Babe Ruth pitched a complete game win for the New York Yankees after going nine years without taking the mound. And to put the exclamation point on, it came at the expense of his former team at Fenway Park.

It came at the end of an unsuccessful season for both clubs. The Yankees (86-68) finished third, while the BoSox placed at the bottom of the ‘second division’ with a putrid 52-102 mark.

Ruth began his career in Boston in 1914 as a left-handed starter and proved to be quite effective in more ways than one. He was on the top hurlers in the game and hit amazingly well for a pitcher. When the Yankees acquired him the Dat after Christmas in 1919, the converted him to a full time outfielder to get him in the line-up every day.

He pitched sporadically for the rest of his career (five appearances from 1920 to 1933).
