USFL Kickoff Weekend

The United States Football League is back and kicks off this weekend with four games. Thirty seven years ago, the original incarnation attempted to go head-to-head against the National Football League and switch their schedule from the spring to the fall. That will not be the case this time, as the USFL is going to be strictly in the spring, more specifically the late spring with a 10-week schedule that will commence in mid-June with the postseason.

Although the eight teams have a city designation, the entire schedule will be played in Birmingham, Alabama at two different locations – Protective Stadium and Legion Field. Next season, four of the eight will play a traditional h0me and away schedule. All eight will look familiar to fans of the old league, with the logos slightly updated but close enough to be retro fitted.

From 1983 thro9ugh 1985, the USFL made football a year-round sport and brought a plethora of big name players to the table such as Herschel Walker, Jim Kelly, Reggie White, Steve Young, Doug Flutie and more.

Here is the line-up for opening weekend:

New Jersey Generals at Birmingham Stallions (7:30 PM, FOX and NBC)

Houston Gamblers at Michigan Panthers (12PM, NBC)

Philadelphia Stars at New Orleans Breakers (4PM, USA)

Tampa Bay Bandits at Pittsburgh Maulers (8PM, FS1)
