XFL WEEK 1
The return of the XFL was highly anticipated and Week 1 is now in the books. Three of the four games were very close, exciting and fairly well played; there was one blowout over the weekend. The football end was definitely a huge positive to take away from the openers, but the business end was not as prosperous. Viewership was down in all comparisons – the 2020 XFL, 2019 AAF and 2022 USFL.
Television Ratings:
*Las Vegas Vipers at Arlington Renegades (ABC) – 1.54 million
*Orlando Guardians at Houston Roughnecks (ESPN/FX) – 1.14 million
*St. Louis Battlehawks at San Antonio Brahmas (ABC) – 1.57 million
*Seattle Sea Dragons at D.C. Defenders (ESPN) – 918,000
For comparison purposes, here are the ratings from the opening weekend if the XFL in 2020 (Feb.8-9)
*DC at Seattle (ABC) – 3.3 million viewers
*L.A. at Houston (FOX) – 3.2 million
*Tampa Bay at New York (FOX) – 3.4 million
*St. Louis at Dallas (ESPN) – 2.495 million
Other comparisons would be with the Alliance of American Football (2019) and United States Football League (2022) opening games.
*AAF (CBS) – 3.25 million
*USFL (FOX/NBC) – 3.07 million
Attendance was as follows:
*Las Vegas Vipers at Arlington Renegades – 12,047 (capacity – 25,000)
*Orlando Guardians at Houston Roughnecks – 12,784 (capacity – 40,000)
*St. Louis Battlehawks at San Antonio Brahmas – 24,245 (capacity – 64,000)
*Seattle Sea Dragons at D.C. Defenders – 12,438 (capacity 20,000)
The 2022 USFL regular season averaged 715,000 viewers (Fox and NBC) and the title game drew 1.52 million on Fox.
