In recent trends, the number of people dieting to lose weight has skyrocketed. Though this trend continues to be the common theme, many don’t see long-term weight loss results. In fact, after losing body weight through dieting, an individual will regain most of it back within a year. What does this suggest? This simply indicates that dieting alone does not work. In other words, losing and maintaining the weight is not a diet, but requires a lifestyle change. If you want to be the lean machine that experiences noticeable weight loss, you have to be consistent. This includes eating sensibly every day, using appropriate resistance training methods, and taking part in cardiovascular exercise weekly. What is one key factor that hinders this? Individuals who lack motivation struggle to change their lifestyle habits—and in the process have a hard time losing weight.
There is a correlation between obesity and lack of motivation. In saying that, people with obesity are often stigmatized, and can lead to shame and embarrassment. In other words, these individuals aren’t supported. Here are some top reasons people struggle to lose weight:
- Have a hard time giving up the foods they enjoy
- Pressed with Time
- Individuals only exercise during good weather
- Joint Pain
- Having mood problems
- Lack the motivation (or motivator to keep themselves accountable)
The approach to obesity and losing weight needs to change to boost interest and motivation. Furthermore, the connection between obesity and low self-esteem is widely known. In fact, the combination of social stigma, low self-esteem, and being overweight can greatly impact the mental health of the obese person. Whether you have struggled to lose weight in the past, or know of someone in a similar situation, it’s not easy—but with the right support system a positive change in lifestyle will happen.
