The New York Yankees announced that they have invited C Ronaldo Hernándezand LHP Jayvien Sandridge to 2025 Major League spring training.
Hernández, 27, has spent parts of nine minor league seasons in the Tampa Bay Rays (2015-2019), Boston Red Sox (2021-23) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2024) organizations, hitting .282/.335/.465 (732-for-2,598) with 363R, 156 doubles, 7 triples, 102HR, 445RBI, 172BB and 24SB in 699 games. He batted .311/.357/.507 (68-for-219) with 29R, 10 doubles, 11HR, 36RBI and 11BB in 63 games with Triple-A Reno in 2024. He appeared defensively at catcher (15G/14GS) and first base (10G/9GS). Hernández was recalled by Boston twice during the 2022 season, but did not appear in a game. The Arjona, Colombia, native was originally signed by Tampa Bay as a non-drafted free agent on August 9, 2014. He was acquired by Boston from Tampa Bay along with INF Nick Sogard and cash considerations in exchange for LHP Jeffrey Springs and RHP Chris Mazza on February 17, 2021. Hernández signed a minor league contract with Arizona on December 20, 2023, and was released by the club on September 18, 2024.
Sandridge, 25, has spent parts of six minor league seasons in the Baltimore Orioles (2018-19), Cincinnati Reds (2021-23) and San Diego Padres (2024) organizations, going 13-13 with eight saves and a 3.87 ERA (204.2IP, 148H, 144R/88ER, 168BB, 302K, 16HR) in 152 games (one start). The left-handed pitcher combined with Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso in 2024 to go 4-4 with four saves and a 4.28 ERA (61.0IP, 56H, 33R/29ER, 49BB, 95K, 7HR) in 52 relief appearances. The Hagerstown, Md., native was originally selected by Baltimore in the 32nd round of the First-Year Player Draft. Sandridge was released by Baltimore on May 20, 2020. He then signed a two-year minor league contract with Cincinnati on June 9, 2021 and a one-year minor league contract with the club on November 8, 2022. Sandridge was then signed by San Diego to a one-year minor league contract on November 20, 2023.
The number of players currently scheduled to report to spring training is 69.
