The New York Mets have announced that the team will wear a memorial “Davey” patch on the sleeve of both their home and road uniforms throughout the 2026 season, honoring legendary manager Davey Johnson.
Johnson passed away on September 5, 2025, at the age of 82. He remains the winningest manager in Mets history, recording 595 career wins and posting a franchise-best .588 winning percentage.
His most iconic achievement came in 1986, when he led the Mets to a franchise-record 108 regular-season wins and a dramatic World Series championship. From 1984 through 1990, Johnson’s teams averaged more than 95 wins per season, establishing one of the most dominant eras in franchise history.
“Davey was a bold manager who led with quiet confidence and an unwavering belief in his team,” said Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen. “He cared deeply about his players both on and off the field. Many of the greatest players in Mets history credit him for their success. As we approach the 40th anniversary of the 1986 championship, this is a fitting tribute to the man who led that team to glory.”
As part of the tribute, Johnson’s family will participate in the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day at Citi Field on March 26 against Pittsburgh. His widow, Susan, will accompany his stepson Jeremiah Allen and grandson Kai Casebolt to the mound, while Mets Hall of Famers Darryl Strawberry and Mookie Wilson will be on hand to catch the pitch.
