ASC New York Falls to New York Shockers 2-1 on Late Goal in Season Opener
American Soccer Club New York was edged 2-1 by the New York Shockers in its 2026 National Premier Soccer League season opener on Saturday night at Mitchel Athletic Complex.
A stoppage-time goal proved to be the difference as the visitors secured the win in dramatic fashion.
Shockers Strike Late to Seal Victory
Thomas Sams scored in the 91st minute, beating goalkeeper Aidan Ganun to lift the Shockers to a 2-1 victory.
New York opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Rood Apolon found the back of the net, giving the Shockers a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
ASC New York Responds in Second Half
The Fighting Tomcats came out strong after the break and found the equalizer in the 75th minute when defender Tommy Wagner scored the club’s first goal of the season.
“I thought we had the momentum after that goal,” Wagner said. “It felt like we were going to push on and get another.”
Missed Opportunity Late for Fighting Tomcats
ASC New York continued to press for a go-ahead goal, but a late defensive breakdown allowed the Shockers to capitalize in stoppage time.
“It was frustrating,” said head coach John Fitzgerald. “We started strong and got back into the match, but one mistake late cost us.”
The loss marks the second consecutive season-opening defeat for ASC New York, following a 2025 campaign in which both meetings with the Shockers ended in draws.
