Louisville Kings Capture 2026 United Bowl Championship in Thrilling Comeback Over DC Defenders
The Louisville Kings completed one of the most remarkable seasons in spring football history on Saturday afternoon, defeating the DC Defenders 27-20 to win the 2026 United Bowl and capture a championship in the franchise’s inaugural season.
Running back Ian Wheeler earned United Bowl MVP honors after rushing for 81 yards and scoring the game-changing touchdown that helped spark Louisville’s second-half comeback.
Playing before a sold-out crowd at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., the Kings overcame a nine-point halftime deficit and a hostile road environment to secure their sixth consecutive victory and the first championship in franchise history.
Head coach Chris Redman, a Louisville native, delivered a title to his hometown in his first season leading the expansion franchise.
Defenders Control First Half
The DC Defenders came out firing and established control early behind their defense and rushing attack.
After forcing Louisville to turn the ball over on downs during its opening possession, running back Deon Jackson ignited the offense with a 20-yard run that helped set up a 48-yard field goal by Matt McCrane for a 3-0 lead.
The game then produced one of its biggest turning points.
Defenders running back Xazavian Valladay appeared headed for a long touchdown after breaking free for a 54-yard run. However, Louisville defensive back Keaton Ellis chased him down and punched the football loose at the goal line. The ball rolled through the end zone for a touchback, erasing a potential touchdown and keeping the Kings within striking distance.
Louisville’s defense continued to make game-changing plays.
After a hard hit by Corey Mayfield Jr. forced a fumble on a short pass to Ty Scott, Eric Garror scooped up the loose ball and returned it for a touchdown, giving the Kings a brief 7-3 advantage.
The Defenders quickly responded.
Valladay redeemed himself later in the quarter with a spectacular 51-yard touchdown run to restore DC’s lead. McCrane added two more field goals as the Defenders carried a 16-7 advantage into halftime.
Kings Begin the Comeback
Louisville struggled offensively throughout the first half, managing fewer than 100 yards before the break.
The Kings finally found life in the third quarter when UFL Special Teams Player of the Year Tanner Brown drilled a 57-yard field goal to cut the deficit to six.
Moments later, the momentum shifted dramatically when DC quarterback Jason Bean reinjured his left shoulder and was forced to leave the game. E.J. Perry entered in relief for the Defenders.
Louisville capitalized.
Quarterback Chandler Rogers connected with Tarik Black on a spectacular 40-yard completion down the sideline, setting up another Tanner Brown field goal that trimmed the deficit to 16-13.
Wheeler Delivers Championship Moment
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Ian Wheeler produced the defining play of the season.
The Louisville running back found a crease, exploded through the line, and raced 40 yards for the go-ahead touchdown, giving the Kings their first lead since the opening half.
The momentum completely swung in Louisville’s favor.
Shortly afterward, Cameron Dantzler intercepted Perry, and two plays later James Robinson powered into the end zone to extend the lead to 27-16.
The Defenders mounted one final rally.
Facing third-and-long, DC intentionally positioned itself for a four-point field goal attempt, and McCrane delivered with a booming 60-yard kick to cut the deficit to seven.
Despite one last drive into Louisville territory, the Defenders were unable to convert on fourth down, allowing the Kings defense to seal the championship.
Defense Delivers in Championship Victory
Louisville’s defense proved to be the difference in the second half.
The Kings held the Defenders to just four points after halftime while forcing key turnovers and limiting DC to just 2-for-12 on third-down conversions.
Louisville finished with:
- Three takeaways
- Two sacks
- Six pass breakups
- Five total turnovers forced in the game
The championship matchup also set a UFL title-game record with five total turnovers.
Historic First Season for Louisville
The victory capped an extraordinary turnaround for the expansion Kings.
After beginning the season 0-3, Louisville surged into the playoffs, upset the St. Louis Battlehawks in the postseason, and completed a perfect 3-0 season sweep of the DC Defenders with the championship victory.
Wheeler became the first running back in UFL history to earn United Bowl MVP honors, while Tanner Brown continued his outstanding season by converting both field-goal attempts and providing another critical spark for Louisville.
For the Kings, the 2026 season will forever be remembered as the year an expansion franchise climbed to the top of the UFL mountain.
In just their first season of existence, the Louisville Kings are United Bowl Champions.
