A once in a lifetime opportunity was snatched away when Miami Marlins manager Clayton McCulloh pulled starter Eury Perez after seven innings and 92 pitches… and grooving in a potential perfect game. The right-hander was in only his third start since coming back from an injury, but that was a freak accident to his leg while he was stretching out. He is nearly three years removed from Tommy John surgery and has been solid since missing the entire 2024 campaign recovering. He could have started the eighth inning and see if he could have made short work of the Athletics.
This modern train of thought that a professional has only 100 pitches maximum in his arm on any given night needs to be looked at on a case-by-case basis, especially when there’s as much at stake as a perfect game is taking place. There have only been 24 perfect games in over 150 years of Major League Baseball and Perez deserved a chance at adding to that list.
