Yankees Acquire Slugger Luis García Jr. From Nationals in Four-Player Trade
The New York Yankees have bolstered their lineup for the stretch run, acquiring infielder Luis García Jr. from the Washington Nationals in exchange for right-handed pitchers Jake Bird, Yovanny Cruz, Jack Cebert and Ben Grable.
The move brings one of baseball’s hottest hitters to the Bronx as the Yankees continue strengthening their roster for the postseason race.
García Jr. Enjoying Career-Best Season
The 26-year-old is in the midst of the best offensive campaign of his Major League career.
In 104 games with Washington this season, García Jr. is batting .283 with 23 home runs, 76 RBIs, 20 doubles and five triples, already establishing career highs in both home runs and RBIs.
His power production has placed him among the American League’s most dangerous hitters. García Jr. ranks among the Major League leaders in slugging percentage, RBIs, multi-home run games and extra-base hits.
He has also been particularly effective against right-handed pitching, batting .295 with 20 home runs, while producing a .330 average with runners in scoring position.
One of Baseball’s Hottest Hitters
García Jr. arrives in New York during an extended hot streak.
Since May 9, he has hit .305 with 22 home runs and 60 RBIs over 70 games, leading the Major Leagues in RBIs while ranking among the league leaders in slugging percentage, home runs and OPS during that span.
His production has been even more impressive over his last 32 games, batting .331 with 13 home runs and 30 RBIs since June 22.
That dominant stretch earned García Jr. his first career National League Player of the Week Award.
Versatile Defensive Addition
While García Jr. has spent much of his Major League career at second base, he has transitioned into a larger role at first base this season.
He has appeared in 93 games at first base, while also making nine starts as the designated hitter.
Over seven Major League seasons with Washington, García Jr. owns a career .268 batting average with 81 home runs, 345 RBIs and 53 stolen bases in 708 games.
Defensively, he has played first base, second base and shortstop, giving manager Aaron Boone additional flexibility throughout the remainder of the season.
Yankees Part With Four Pitchers
To complete the trade, New York sent four pitchers to Washington.
The package includes major league relievers Jake Bird and Yovanny Cruz, along with pitching prospects Jack Cebert and Ben Grable.
Bird appeared in 36 games for the Yankees this season, while Cruz recently made his Major League debut after posting strong numbers with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Cebert and Grable were both selected in the 2025 MLB Draft and ranked among the organization’s developing pitching prospects.
Yankees Add Another Middle-of-the-Order Bat
The acquisition gives the Yankees another proven run producer as they prepare for the final months of the regular season.
With García Jr. producing career-best power numbers and arriving in the middle of one of the hottest stretches of his career, New York adds an impact bat capable of providing immediate offense while also bringing defensive versatility to the infield.
