James Maslow – Multi-Talented Celebrity Takes Training & Diet Seriously

Picture this hypothetical situation and put yourself in it: you are a 24-year-old single guy who is an actor, singer and dancer, are extremely good looking, in terrific shape and live a block away from the beach in Venice, California.

The vast majority of us would spend a ton of time partying and eating fattening foods at the top restaurants all over the globe. But not James Maslow.

“I like to train six days a week,” he says. “I love to exercise and it’s not always lifting weights. I also love to box and like to play sports.”

As a youngster, Maslow played a lot sports. But when he was 13, he attended a performing arts school that didn’t have any sports teams, so he decided to join a gym to keep himself in shape. But he didn’t take it that serious and make it a full lifestyle until he was 20.

By that time, Maslow was already cast in the role as James Diamond on the hit Nickelodeon series “Big Time Rush,” in which he and his three cast mates played a boy band. They did their own singing and eventually released albums and went on world tours.

“We filmed four seasons and the band became a hit, as well,” recalls Maslow. “We have three gold albums, even platinum in a few countries like Venezuela. And the band still tours; (this past spring) we were in South America.”

No rest for the weary as Maslow immediately began rehearsing for ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” nine hours after his flight landed back in the United States. Maslow became a household name with his sexy dance routines with partner Peta Murgatroyd and his open shirt costumes during their routines, exposing a finely detailed six-pack.

“I’ve never been the type of guy who just takes my shirt off for no reason, so (back then) my fans and America have seen (my abs) more than ever,” Maslow says with a humble laugh. “But (it was) good timing and I’m proud of where I have come because I didn’t always have this. I had to work reallty hard to get where I’m at. And it’s been consistent over many years.” Maslow added that he was “chubby” as a child and that gave him even more incentive to get in shape.

The famous Gold’s Gym in Venice is where Maslow can be found frequently and he has been working with Eric “Eric The Trainer” Fleishman (seen in photo), who has implemented some different aspects into his training with an agenda in mind that includes Maslow’s career.

“I’m trying to use fitness to look good, look better and that is something that Eric is all about,” comments Maslow. “Use fitness as a tool (for these reasons). The bottom line is you get stronger, you get healthier.”

As far as his diet goes, Maslow eats basically a clean one now that he feels comfortable with his 6’2″, 170-pound frame. But that wasn’t always the case, as he was once so thin-framed that Fleishman described him as being “the best looking knitting needle” when they began working together three years ago. So the two formulated a plan.

“The first thing that I had to do was put on some more muscle,” Maslow remembered. “A lot of people start doing cardio when they’re skinny and you’re never going to gain size. So I ate and ate and ate and lifted weights. And once that I was able to get some more size, I began honing my diet a bit more.”

Added Fleishman, “James is a true pro. He’s driven harder than most of the actors that I work with.”

Party on!
